Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!!
What is ‘MNM’all about?
In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!
This Just In!!…
#1- “The Weekend Winner.” This past weekend, the #1 spot in the box office arena went to NONE of the 3 wide new releases. Interestingly enough, the new releases didn’t even make it into the top 5 spots over the weekend. The weekend went to the action stars as The Expendables 2 and Bourne Legacy took over the top two spots respectively. Not surprising that Premium Rush didn’t take the top spot, but a little surprising as to where exactly it landed. Also surprising to see the political documentary 2016 Obama’s America in the Top 10. The horror flick Apparation was #12 over the weekend…beaten out by Jordin Sparks’ Sparkle, but defeating Total Recall.
Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Aug 24 -Sun, Aug 26:
- The Expendables 2 ~$13.5M
- Bourne Legacy ~$9.3M
- ParaNorman ~$8.5M
- The Campaign ~$7.4M
- The Dark Knight Rises ~$7.2M
- The Odd Life of Timothy Green ~$7.1M
- Premium Rush ~$6.3M (review on the way)
- 2016 Obama’s America $6.2M
- Hope Springs ~$6M (review on the way)
- Hit and Run ~$4.7M (review on the way)
What did YOU watch this weekend?
#2- “Any Justice for the Justice League?” DC and Warner Bros seem to be unable to find a director for their hopeful Justice League movie. A couple of weeks ago, Ben Affleck was rumored to be receiving a copy of the script to gauge his interest on possibly helming the superhero project. Ben Affleck is denying that he is working on the project, however, according to a report and interview over at 24 Hours Vancouver:
“I’m not working on the Justice League. One of the problems with entertainment web sites is that they need to fill pages, and that’s how rumours get started.”
He continued, “Justice League sounds really exciting, but it’s not something I’m working on.”
Of course, the site goes on to speculate that Affleck only used the present tense and did not say something along the lines of “I WILL not be working on the Justice League film.” and therefore leaves it open for the possibility. hmmm…what do you think?
On the other hand, the Wachowskis are now in the spotlight as the rumored runner ups for the DC film. Their upcoming film Cloud Atlas is catching some attention, and with V for Vendetta and The Matrix trilogy already in their resume of filmography, it may be fun to see them bring the Justice League to the big screen. According to MovieHole:
“Warner Bros are apparently jazzed with Cloud Atlas, and love that it’s as much a spectacle as it is a showcase for the immense ensemble involved, so it makes sense the W’s are under consideration.”
Are you even interested in such a film?
#3- “Monsters University details.” Billy Crystal recently shared a little bit more insight of what to expect from the upcoming anticipated prequel to the Pixar magic that is Monsters Inc. Monsters University has been officially described by the following:
Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Crystal added this:
“[Mike and Sully] end up in the same fraternity where they have this scare competition like Greek Games in college,” ”They have to mobilize a group, sort of like Revenge of the Nerds-monsters, and get them ready to be scary.”
“They’re 17 and 18 years old in the script. My guy has a retainer, even.”
The film is slated for a June 21, 2013 release and I can’t wait.
Are you ready for more Monsters?
#4- ”Rumored Return of the Rocketeer.” This past week a rumor hit the web that Disney is hopeful to bring back The Rocketeer. The original 1991 film directed by Joe Johnston (who directed last year’s Captain America) did not do so well in its theatrical debut. However, it looks like they may try to give The Rocketeer another chance. No word yet if Johnston would be returning, but I’m down to give the Rocketeer another flying chance!
See the report from CleverMovies here:
Would you like to see this reboot made? Again, this is currently in the RUMOR stage.
#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:
Battleship- “You sunk my Battleship!” Yes, the film based loosely on the classic board game finally makes its way to your local video store. Starring Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and others, this film comes to you with not much more than meets the eye. Rent it if you must. Buy at your own discretion. Here’s my far more entertaining dual REVIEW with my good friend, Paula.
Several other films also release this week. Check it out!
Also releasing: The Lucky One, Think Like a Man (REVIEW), Darling Companion, Headhunters, and The Walking Dead Season 2
Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”
Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!
