Movie News Monday for August 16, 2010!

On Sunday, I read a friend’s post on Facebook (ya know, that social networking website?!) and it said “Is tomorrow Monday already??!” Well, happy about it, or not, MONDAY is HERE! But that’s okay, because if you are here, then you are among the fortunate because that means it’s: “Movie News Monday!” in the ScarletSp1der’s Web! Yay!!! What’s MNM? In case you didn’t know: Every ”Movie News Monday” this is the place for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! Keeping you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Hope you enjoy!

This Just In!!!….

#1– Well, moviegoers, you had many titles to choose from this weekend. The Expendables; Scott Pilgrim vs. The World; Eat, Pray, Love; Inception; The Other Guys; just to name a few. Has anyone gone to see Cats & Dogs? Did any movie take out The Other Guys after their impressive debut the previous weekend? Answer: Yes. The Expendables. Over the weekend, The Expendables won in the box office contest earning $35 million! Congrats to Director/Actor Sylvester Stallone. Coming in at 2nd place was Julia Roberts’ latest Eat, Pray, Love with $23.7 million. Following those two this past weekend were The Other Guys at $18 million, Inception at $11.3 million, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which debuted in 5th place earning $10.5 million. The movies for this upcoming week don’t look too threatening to the coffers of the box office champs as they gear up for round 2. Releasing this week: Lottery Ticket, Vampires Suck, Nanny McPhee Returns, Piranha 3D, and The Switch. I think The Expendables is safe. What do you think?

Oh, and congratulations to Toy Story 3 which, as of Friday became the highest grossing animated film worldwide ever with $920 million!! It passed Shrek2‘s $919.8 million and is now officially #1. It is also Disney’s 4th highest grossing film ever following Pirates of the Caribbean 1 and 2 and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (SMH).

#2– August 27th is the date! Not just for the release of the movie Takers starring T.I., but also for the re-release of the #1 movie that did not win the Oscar for Best Picture: Avatar. That’s right. James Cameron (ironically, it’s his 56th birthday today) is sending the #1 grossing movie back to the theaters with an additional 8-9 minutes of extra footage added in! I just hope that those who go (including yours truly) do so because they want to see the movie on the big screen once again, and not pay just to see 8-9 minutes more. These extra minutes of footage are said to include an extended intimate scene between Jake Sully and Naytiri along with a hunting scene with many more creatures of Pandora for us to see. Any takers on how much more Avatar will rake in with this re-release? I’m with my friend Meccadawn here! He votes for George Lucas to release all of the Star Wars movies in a row in the theater. Each one to play for a week or two before the next one releases! I’d never leave the theater! 🙂

#3– As you may know, Ant-Man was one of the founding members of Marvel’s The Avengers. Earlier this year it was announced that he would not be in The Avengers movie. Instead, it has been announced that Ant-Man will be receiving his own movie…but hold your applause. For those die-hard fans, Ant-Man will not be done in normal superhero movie style. Director Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) has alluded to the fact that he sees Ant-Man as more of a shrunken down superspy like James Bond, instead of a Rock ’em Sock ’em robot like Iron Man, and intends to show him as such. We’ll just have to wait and see if this new Ant-Man will enjoy this picnic in the park.

#4– and finally! What releases tomorrow on Blu-ray and DVD? NOTHING!!! okay, okay. To be fair, let me state that nothing of interest to TheScarletSpider releases Tuesday. Remember, my duty to you all as my readers is to protect you from spending your money on bad movies and to send you to movies you will love! (Read my mission statement on the page entitled “Who is TheScarletSp1der”). But, if you HAVE to spend your money Tuesday on a new release movie, here’s what comes out: The Last Song starring Miley Cyrus, and Furry Vengeance starring Brendan Fraser. Watch at your own risk!

Enjoy your week everyone!

Thanks for reading! Happy watching!
