Well, It’s Monday! You made it through the weekend, and now it’s back to work or school or whatever your regular routine consists of! Hopefully, your regular routine also includes a stop off at “Movie News Monday!” What is MNM all about? In case you don’t know, every “Movie News Monday” this is the place for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! Keeping you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Hope you enjoy!

This Just In!!!…

#1– “By a Landslide!!” Resident Evil: Afterlife absolutely pulverized the competition in the theaters over the weekend. Despite the added surcharge for 3D, and the fact that it was the only new release this past weekend, Resident Evil: Afterlife still completely dominated the box office with a commanding $27.7 million. Congrats to Milla Jovavich and crew for the largest worldwide opening of any of the Resident Evil movies ever!! (btw, Jovavich has promised a sequel)! Takers came in second with $6.1 million (I told you RE dominated!), and The American came in third with $5.9 million. I donated to The American‘s coffers myself and the review will post soon. Machete came in fourth place, earning a mere $4.2 million. Several titles release this week that will give these films some tough competitions! Never Let Me Go, Easy A, Devil, The Town, Alpha and Omega, and Catfish are all scheduled to make their appearances this weekend! Who do you think will win? Which one are you most excited to see?

#2– “The Queen and the Tempest-Tossed.” Oscar-winner Helen Mirren (The Queen, Red, The Debt) stars in a new edition of Shakespeare’s last play The Tempest. Re-adapted for the big screen, this version of The Tempest has a twist. Helen Mirren is the female version of the protagonist, Prospero.  As Prospera, Mirren brings several additional elements to the plot and story in this rendition of The Tempest. A most interesting and intriguing situation. I love Mirren’s style and class and I have always enjoyed Shakespeare. This seems pretty win-win to me. Along with Mirren, The Tempest boasts a great cast including Alfred Molina, Russell Brand, Djimon Hounsou, Ben Whishaw, and David Strathairn. This classic releases in December 2010. Coincidentally, this year marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s great play!

#3– “Three of a Kind.” Marc Guggenheim, co-writer for upcoming superhero flick The Green Lantern, addressed rumors this week about GL 2 and 3. As the first movie finished production in New Orleans recently, Guggenheim reported that he and his team have turned in elements for a story for The Flash and are working on The Green Lantern2 story. A lot of rumors have circulated around this subject and how they can be working on GL 2 and 3, when 1 hasn’t even made it to theaters yet. Guggenheim said that when The Green Lantern‘s story was first pitched that there was more than enough to make it a trilogy. So much of Hal Jordan’s story needs to be told. According to him, after visiting the set in New Orleans, this movie is going to be so big! In my opinion, they have to make three! There is talk of just filming 2 and 3 back to back. In addition to this news, Guggenheim neither confirmed or denied any type of mention of The Flash in The Green Lantern movies but it definitely looks like a possibility. It’s nice to see DC focusing on more than just Batman and Superman in the movies. Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan in The Green Lantern which releases June 17, 2011.

#4– “New Blu-ray/DVD release for Tuesday 9-14-10.” Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.  Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this videogame based movie of adventure in the desert. I enjoyed watching this movie and it deserves a look. Click here for TheScarletSp1der’s review of the movie!

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

  1. I personally feel that his portrayal of Wade was perfect, until they turned him into “Deadpool”. But that wasn’t his fault. As for playing Hal Jordan, I think he’s a great pic. I honestly feel that he can pull it off just fine. Its Sinestro I am more worried about.
