It’s MONDAY! and that means it’s “MOVIE NEWS MONDAY!!” Hooray! This Just In!!…

#1– “Weekend Box-Office Winner.” Two months ago, The Expendables remained the #1 movie for multiple weekends in a row. Since then, no other new release has done that…until now. Congratulations are in order for The Social Network which earned the #1 box office spot for the second weekend in a row! Life As We Know It came in a close second with Secretariat placing third in the box office race.

Here are the weekend box office numbers for you!

  1. The Social Network $15.5 million ($46 million overall since it released 2 wks ago.)
  2. Life As We Know It $14.6 million
  3. Secretariat $12.6 million
  4. Legend of the Guardians $7 million
  5. My Soul To Take $6.9 million
  6. The Town $6.3 million ($73 million overall since it released 4 wks ago.)
  7. Wall Street: MSN $4.6 million
  8. Easy A $4.2 million
  9. Case 39 $2.6 million
  10. You Again $2.4 million

#2– “No 3D for you!” Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 will not be released in theaters in 3D next month, as was previously announced. Disappointed? Well, hang on. Warner Bros stated this past week that despite all of the best efforts put forth by the teams working on the movie, they just haven’t been able to convert all of the scenes into 3D and maintain the high quality standards necessary to correctly and proudly present the film properly to fans worldwide. There just isn’t enough time for them to complete the film conversion by November. So, instead of messing up the movie experience, Warner Bros has decided to release part 1 in 2D. This means that your wallets and purses will be freed from the extra cost of 3D glasses! Say, “Thank you, Warner Bros!” 🙂 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 releases November 19, 2010 in theaters everywhere!

#3– “Bourne Again, without Damon?” The upcoming movie entitled Bourne Legacy will not be starring the franchise’s main player: Matt Damon. But that’s because it also will not have the character Jason Bourne in it either! Confused? So was I, at first. Not too long ago, Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum‘s director Paul Greengrass stepped away from directing a fourth Bourne installment. Damon stated that he would not return as Bourne unless Greengrass was a part of the project. Tony Gilroy, sceenwriter for the Bourne movies, is set to direct Bourne Legacy and stated last week that Damon will not be needed…and neither will Bourne for that matter. Bourne Legacy will not be based on the novel, it will focus on a new hero and will not ignore Jason Bourne and the events surrounding his adventure. Here below are some of the comments that Gilroy stated:

“It’s a completely original screenplay. This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter … this is a stand-alone project.”

“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal. Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy … the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].”

“Everything you saw in the first three films actually happened, and everyone who got into [it] will be rewarded for paying attention. We’re going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas. When you see what we’re going and see what we’re doing it’ll be pretty obvious … but Jason Bourne’s activities in the first three films is the immediate trigger.”

Bourne is tenatively scheduled to release in July 2012.

#4– “Sam Raimi is ‘Oz’Some!!!” Four months back or so, I reported to you that Sam Raimi had two projects on the horizon: a World of Warcraft movie and a Wizard of Oz prequel. That hasn’t changed. Back in June there was a lot of chatter about it, but now Raimi has confirmed that he will direct Oz: The Great and Powerful for Disney. Having left the Spiderman franchise, Sam Raimi has not been without work. He is also producing a few films including a scifi movie entitled EDF and a reboot of The Shadow. Oz: The Great and Powerful will feature the story of the “wonderful wizard of Oz” and how he became a “whiz of a Wiz, if ever a Wiz there was!” Robert Downey, Jr. is still in negotiations for the part.

I just want to know how Raimi is going to put his classic 1973 Oldsmobile Delta Royal into the film. He’s had it in every one of his movies except for The Quick and The Dead!

#5– Blu-ray/DVD release for FRIDAY October 15th. How To Train Your Dragon in 3D. Go get this movie! This is, by far, one of the very best animated films I have ever seen! It’s too bad that not everyone has 3D tvs to enjoy this on in actual 3D. It is amazing. But that’s okay. Go get it in 2D nonetheless and enjoy this fun family animated feature! How To Train Your Dragon hits the mark and you will not be disappointed! Hurry, the dragons will be flying off the shelves!

***Correction Notice: Last week I reported to you that Emma Stone (Easy A, Superbad) would be starring as Mary Jane Watson in the new upcoming Spiderman reboot film. That news has since been modified. Here is the most updated news: Emma Stone has been officially cast as Gwen Stacy (Peter Parker’s blond counterpart who had the title of his girlfriend before Mary Jane Watson did). Apparently there still is no official word on who will be MJ yet. Oddly enough though, Emma Stone is a natural blond so she will not have to re-dye her hair red to play this role! So, there you have it!

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

  1. Hi Scarletsp1der!

I’m actually glad HP decided to go without 3D if it doesn’t look right. I mean, Clash of the Titans looked horrible as it was shot with 3D technology. I personally would rather watch a movie WITHOUT having to fuss with those glasses, when I saw Toy Story 3 I cried so much that the glasses got so dirty and I couldn’t even clean ’em so I had to watch the last half hour with fuzzy glasses! Pretty annoying to say the least.

Funny, I had a long discussion with my colleague at work about Bourne. Bourne without Damon, yeah ok. But Bourne Legacy without Jason Bourne??? WHY on earth still call it a Bourne movie?? It’s just the stupidest idea Hollywood comes up with and there have been plenty. I might blog about it later this week or the next.

I just put the ‘Dragon’ movie on my Netflix queue, thanks for reminding me as the dvd comes out this Friday. I’m so looking forward to it, I didn’t get a chance to see it in the theater.

    • 3D just isn’t right for certain movies. You’re right! Clash of the Titans was horrible! haha sorry for your experience at Toy Story3, sounds like it was “fun.”

When it comes to Bourne…I’m not too sure how that’s going to work. I wonder if they are at least going to toss in some flashback scenes from the first 3 movies with him in it. I guess, based off of the title, they are going to try to springboard off of the success of the Bourne series in order to launch this film and that’s the only reason for the “Bourne” title. According to Gilroy, it’s not even going to follow the novel “Bourne Legacy” so I don’t understand what else they would be attempting with this film other than riding on the coat-tails of Bourne’s success.

It’s too bad you can’t see ‘Dragon’ in 3D. I know you may not have too much of an affinity for 3D in the theaters, but this one was very well done! Very well! I hope you enjoy the movie! I did immensely! Thanks for stopping by!
