Movie News Monday for October 18, 2010!

Monday is upon us….once again! No more weekend. This news may make you want to frown, but, instead, turn that frown upside-down!! When Monday comes, that means it is time for “MOVIE NEWS MONDAY!!” Hooray! That being said, allow me to be the first to officially welcome you to MNM today! What is MNM? I’m so glad you asked! MNM (or Movie News Monday) is the place to go every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! Keeping you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Hope you enjoy!

This Just In!!…

#1– “Weekend Box-Office Winner.” Well, this news is circulating the entertainment world like crazy, because Jackass 3D completely demolished the box office in theaters this weekend. A second milestone in theaters in as many weeks. Two weekends ago, The Social Network  took the #1 spot for the second week in a row (last film to do that prior to was The Expendables). Last weekend Jackass 3D earned the highest weekend box office dollars amount since Inception‘s $60.4 million. It earned a whopping estimated $50 million! Wow! (You have to take into account that every ticket sold had the 3D glasses surcharge attached to it, but wow still!)

The film only cost $19 million to produce. While the first two films earned a little over $20 million over the entire weekend they released, Jackass 3D earned over $20 million on its opening day! RED came in second with The Social Network at third. Here’s the numbers for the top five:

  1. Jackass 3D $50 million
  2. RED $22.5 million
  3. The Social Network $11 million
  4. Secretariat $9.5 million
  5. Life As We Know It $9.2 million

Allow me to put this into perspective a different way. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole has been in theaters for 4 weeks and only earned $46 million. Easy A has been in theaters for 5 weeks and has only earned $52 million. Jackass 3D, in THREE DAYS, earned $50 million. I think the success is short lived and that the numbers will drastically drop after this initial launch. But, we’ll see. Stranger things have happened.

#2– “The Queen of the Nile comes to Hollywood.” Cleopatra is getting her own movie, and Elizabeth Taylor will not be reprising her role again as the young queen this time around like she did in 1963. (can you imagine if she did?). Angelina Jolie will star as Cleopatra, and, perhaps, the biggest news about all of this is who will be sitting in the director’s chair. James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar) is set to direct this film about the true, unglamorized life of Cleopatra. It will most likely be in 3D as well. But before he starts to work on that, or even Avatar2, it is my understanding that J. Cameron is set to finish his work on a remake of the classic film Fantastic Voyage! That’s exciting! Do you remember the 1966 classic? Click here to see the trailer of what Cameron’s remaking! Jolie’s Cleopatra is set to make her way to theaters sometime in 2013.

#3– “Help Wanted.” Apparently Mars Needs Moms! Disney just released a poster for their new animated film entitled Mars Needs Moms. Starring the vocal talents of Seth Green, Joan Cusack, and more, this movie follows 9 yr old Milo as he realizes just how much he cares about his mom when martians take her away to be a mom to their young on Mars instead! This fun and funny adventure is based off of a 2007 children’s book by best-selling author Berkeley Breathed. The film is scheduled to release next year. Here is the teaser poster!

#4– Blu-ray/DVD release for Tuesday: Predators. This film starring Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Laurence Fishbourne and aliens releases tomorrow on Blu-ray. Some loved it, others didn’t. Check out the review here if you’d like prior to rushing out to the stores for your copy of this extraterrestrial fight for survival, or game of fun…depending on whose side you’re on!

#5– P.S. news: Top Gun2 is in talks. Apparently the 1986 classic will have a sequel with possibly a reunion of sorts with producer Steven Spielberg, director Tony Scott, and even Tom Cruise (?). It has been reported that the character Maverick has been written into a working script with a role that exceeds just being a flight instructor. Here we go on the Hollywood Highway to the Sequel Zone!

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

  1. I do hope Jackass 3D’s success is short lived… can’t believe that many people like that sort of stuff.

Oh yeah I heard about James Cameron directing Jolie on Cleopatra over the weekend. It’s predictable casting but Cameron’s involvement surprised me.

Btw, are you a fan of the Alien series? If so, have you read my guest post Vision-to-Film on Alien 3? http://wp.me/pxXPC-25N

  2. Ugh. Just found out that Mark Walberg is in the running for Eric Draven in the upcoming (unfortunate) remake of James O’Barrs’ legendary comic, “The Crow”. Why remake “The Crow”? That movie was so awesome because it WAS the ’90s. A modern day version of that movie would be absolutely horrible. Not to mention it is one of the rare cases that the movie is better than the source material. Proyas and Brandon Lee nailed the first one.

Sure, Norrington did changed things forever when he made the first “Blade”, but he also offended the comic community when he made “League For Extraordinary Gentleman”. Not too mention that David S. Goyer is an actual talented writer who was on board for “Blade”, but Nick Cave has done nothing. Horrible news for me.

    • wow! thanks for this report. As is often the topic of my rants on this page…I am saddened by the amount of unoriginality in Hollywood and the “need” for continual remakes, sequels, and prequels. I never saw The Crow myself, but I definitely share in your frustration on the subject.
I enjoyed Blade, but you are right in saying “he also offended the comic community when he made ‘League For Extraordinary Gentleman’.” That made me laugh. I was so bored in that film and hated the plot and character development…oh, wait… I mean the lack thereof!!
When it comes to The Crow remake…I like Wahlberg, but that film will be one that I may wait to stream on netflix or cinemaNow. Thanks for the update! Appreciate it as always!

      • Yeah, “The Crow” was a great film when it released because it was so ’90s. Being a child othe grunge era it became a must on my shelf when it finally hit VHS back in the day. As for “L.F.G.”, the comic was amazing. It goes without saying that Alan Moore (“Watchmen”, “V for Vendetta”, “L.F.G.”, “Swamp Thing”, “From Hell”, “The Killing Joke”) is an amazing author. However, the “L.F.G.” adaptation failed to capture the comic in just about everyway. Shame.

That said, have you gotten to see the image of the prop lantern for “Green Lantern”? Surprised to see them mess up the lantern so bad. I mean…is it really that hard to make a prop green lantern?

      • You know, I did see it. and it looks horrible compared to the original. You wonder sometimes, why they show these things early. let me be disappointed in the movie itself instead of going into it already disappointed. Well, we’ll see.

  3. Well, new Crow news. The director Stephen Norrington has left the project. Wonder what’s going to happen now.

As for Lantern, although more and more things concern me, the fact thar Geoff Johns is working on the film gives me hope that it will turn out awesome in the end. He has single handedly given Lantern his best stories.

    • I did see that Norrington left the project. Since you put me on to the movie, I’ve been monitoring the events! Good looking out! You are right, we will have to see! I still think that Bradley Cooper should have been chosen for GL instead of Ryan Reynolds though. (1) Reynolds has yet to do a “serious” role…Hal Jordan wasn’t a jokester, (2) if Cooper was GL then Reynolds could be The Flash…which I think suits him better, and (3) then a Justice League movie would just be even that much more awesome. My opinion! Cooper was in the running for GL, but they chose Reynolds instead….we’ll see.
