Well, It’s Monday! May 9th! Welcome to this week’s exciting edition of “Movie News Monday!” (also affectionately referred to as “MNM!”). What is ‘MNM’ all about?
In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!
This Just In!!…
#1- “The Weekend Winner.” Well, the clash of the titans literally happened this weekend in the box office! Would Thor topple Fast Five which opened the summer last weekend with over $86 million?!! Thor definitely hammered its way to the top. In 3D and in 2D, Thor led the charts with an opening day of around $27 million. Fast Five still making its presence known at the number 2 spot! It would seem that a lot of the limited releases, including Mel Gibson’s The Beaver, received little to no love in theater count or ticket sales.
Here are the weekend’s results:
- Thor ~$65.7 million (NEW RELEASE)
- Fast Five ~$32.4 million
- Jumping the Broom ~$15.2 million (NEW RELEASE)
- Something Borrowed ~$13.9 million (NEW RELEASE)
- Rio ~$8.5 million
- Water for Elephants ~$6.1 million
- Madea’s Big Happy Family ~$4.2 million
- Soul Surfer ~$2.3 million
- Prom ~$2.2 million
- Hoodwinked Too ~$2 million
Other NEW RELEASES:
- #15. There Be Dragons ~$705,000
- #36. The Beaver ~$107,000
- #59. Last Night ~$32,000
- #96. Passion Play ~$2,100
Congrats to THOR !
#2- ”One Odd Name to Play Another?!” Rumor now has it that Keanu Reeves may be the one to star as Kaneda in the highly discussed live-action film that Warner Bros. is working to produce based on the popular anime series Akira. Akira features Kaneda who is the leader of a motorcycle gang. Remember when the rumors pointed to Zac Efron, Justin Timberlake, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and many other NON-Japanese actors?
There is no ETA for the project to make it to the big screen yet, but who knows…by then Bradley Cooper or maybe even Lady Gaga may be up for the part! 😉 Who do you think should be in the mix? Don’t say Ryan “Mr. I’m In Everything” Reynolds either!!
#3- ”Django Smith?!” You may remember in Last Week’s ‘MNM’ how I mentioned director Quentin Tarantino’s new and “different” project which he has named Django Unchained. The tale that reportedly features the story of a freed slave on the road to retribution and reunion still remains with the main actor unnamed. But, Tarantino, apparently has his sights set on Will Smith to play the part.
Smith and Tarantino! An interesting and, honestly, unexpected combo. No official offer has been made yet to Smith, but should he be a part of the project, he would work right alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz. Thoughts? Smith-Tarantino? What about Smith working with Samuel L.?? Wow.
#4- “Meet the First Class!” Ready for X-Men: First Class to release? June 3rd is right around the corner. For this film, the producers did something different and launched some mini-trailers that introduce some of the characters in the upcoming film. Each with their own featured trailer! Quite enjoyable actually. See footage and a little bit of backstory for each of the following characters in the 1-2 minute character trailers by clicking the character’s name! Enjoy! Class is almost in session!
These mini-trailers are pretty amazing! X-Men: First Class, I’m ready for you!
#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” No Strings Attached ! Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher star in this rather truer film focusing on the subject of “friends with benefits” and the impossibilities it presents. Click the picture for my review on the film.
Also releasing this week: Blue Valentine and Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never.
Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”
Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!
up next: “Time to Vote Tuesday!” Don’t forget to vote for your favorite Rom-Com couple on last week’s poll, it closes tonite!
