Movie News Monday for May 16, 2011!

May 16, 2011

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (also affectionately referred to as “MNM!”). MNM is at least ONE good reason to look forward to Monday! 😀 What is ‘MNM’ all about, you ask?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.” This past week on the FACEBOOK Page for this site, I asked you all which movie would win the box office over the weekend. Thor, Bridesmaids, Fast Five, or Priest? Unanimously, everyone chose Thor. You all must be fortune tellers! Thor did not earn as much as it’s debut weekend ($34 million vs $66 million), but it did earn enough to win first place, with Bridesmaids right on its tail. Next weekend Thor won’t be so lucky as Captain Jack Sparrow ends up in theaters around the nation searching for the Fountain of Youth!

Here are the weekend’s results:

  1. Thor ~$34.7 million
  2. Bridesmaids ~$26.2 million (NEW RELEASE)
  3. Fast Five ~$20.4 million
  4. Priest ~$14.95 million (NEW RELEASE)
  5. Rio ~$8.3 million
  6. Jumping The Broom ~$7.1 million
  7. Something Borrowed ~$6.9 million
  8. Water For Elephants ~$4.2 million
  9. Madea’s Big Happy Family ~$2.2 million
  10. Soul Surfer ~$1.8 million

Other NEW RELEASES

  • Everything Must Go ~$791,677
  • Hesher ~$126,046
  • Go For It ~$119,714
  • Skateland ~$5,254

Thor remains on the throne…for now!!

#2- ”The Amazing Spiderman Set Photos” The latest buzz of the internet surrounding director Marc Webb’s reboot of Spiderman has been the lack of security to prevent leaked footage of the film. Recently, video footage of the pivotal scene of Peter Parker discovering Uncle Ben shot and lying in the street found its way to the web!! I’m not sure for the reason for the lack of security, but photos and video have been flooding the web.

Check out the latest two. One covers the aforementioned scene with Peter and Uncle Ben, and the other shows Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Conners with scales(?) on his neck as he will most likely be transforming into The Lizard. What are your thoughts? The Amazing Spiderman releases July 3, 2012.

#3- ”Fright Night Looks Scary…for all the wrong reasons?!” Colin Farrell fans may want to put away your “Farrell Fan Flags” right now as the latest trailer for his newest project looks to be pretty……..cheesy. First, Farrell sports the worst comb over in the world in the movie Horrible Bosses (Click HERE for the trailer), and now he plays a vampire neighbor and the acting looks atrocious in this remake of the original 1985 Fright Night. Check out the trailer for the vampire thriller Fright Night.

Fright Night releases on August 19, 2011. I, for one, am waiting for more info about another project of his: the remake of Total Recall. (Hey, are you still waving your Farrell Fan Flag?!!!)

#4- “Thor Trades In His Hammer for a Bow and Arrow” No, this isn’t a story about a Thor sequel. Chris Hemsworth, star of Thor, just recently accepted the role of the Huntsman in the upcoming film Snow White and The Huntsman along with Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron. The Huntsman in this side of Snow White’s story teaches the fugitive Snow White how to fight in order to go up against the Evil Queen. Undoubtedly, Hemsworth will also serve as the love interest for Stewart’s Snow White as they run through the forest chained together. Release date is set for December 21, 2012.

*Don’t confuse this film with The Brother’s Grimm: Snow White starring Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, and Armie Hammer that is set to release on June 29,2012.

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” The Mechanic! Starring Jason Statham, Donald Sutherland, and Ben Foster, follow the story of a mercenary for hire seeking revenge for the actions that set in motion the murder of a former employer and friend. Check out my review of The Mechanic here. Rated R for strong violence, language, and sexual content.

Also releasing this week: The Rite, The Roommate and The Other Woman.

BIRTHDAY BONUS: Happy Birthday to the following actors today, May 16th 2011: Pierce Brosnan, 58 and Megan Fox, 25!

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

Happy Monday, T! Wow, Thor remains on the throne… good for Mr. Branagh, I bet now he’s fending off offers from studios to make blockbusters films, he..he.. he’s a good director so I’m looking forward to the inevitable Thor 2, 3, etc. 🙂

Woo hooo Spidey! Can’t wait to see Andrew as the web slinger. As for Colin, meh I don’t have interest to even see the trailer, he’s funny in Horrible Bosses though. Btw, it’s funny how all the cute Brits are now playing vampires. Michael Fassbender has just joined an upcoming vampire romance flick.

Vampires seem to be the “IT” thing over the past couple of years. I wonder how long before someone attempts a remake of Interview With A Vampire starring Daniel Craig, Clive Owen, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, and….Judi Dench! haha

Wow T, that is a great suggestion!! Ted and I are working on a ‘remake’ post together and I definitely will add your idea to my list… I like that film actually, I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing a remake of that. I might swap Fassbender w/ someone else though (hint: he’s played prince of darkness before) as he’s already been cast in an upcoming vampire flick already. Again, great idea!

It’s Megan Fox’s birthday!?!? O.O I have to do a post on that… lol. (Btw that’s a nice picture of her!)

And regarding Spider-man, that Andrew Garfield kid is a good actor, but I’m kinda worried for the movie….

She 25 now. Wow. Thanks. I liked the pic and searched a while to find it. Thanks for noticing. Garfield looks to make a good Spidey. I hope so.
