Movie News Monday for May 23, 2011!

Welcome to “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”). Everybody loves Mondays here! What would Mondays be without MNM?? I shudder to think! 😀 What is ‘MNM’ all about, you ask?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.” This weekend Pirates truly saw gold (thankful in part to the extra surcharge of 3D). Earning just over $90 million over the weekend in the U.S. means that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides now holds the record for highest grossing opening debut of 2011.

But perhaps even more impressive was Pirates’ launch on other worldwide shores. Over $256 million dollars elsewhere means that, worldwide, Pirates earned over $346 million = #3 of all-time worldwide debut releases, behind Spiderman 3 ($386 million) and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394 million)!

Here are the weekend’s actual results:

  1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ~$90.15 million (NEW RELEASE)
  2. Bridesmaids ~$20.9 million (#2 for 2 weeks in a row!!)
  3. Thor ~$15.5 million
  4. Fast Five ~$10.6 million
  5. Priest ~$4.75 million
  6. Rio ~$4.68 million
  7. Jumping The Broom ~$3.7 million
  8. Something Borrowed ~$3.5 million
  9. Water for Elephants ~$2.17 million
  10. Madea’s Big Happy Family ~$956,000

Congrats to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides…but don’t expect to stay on top with The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2 releasing this upcoming weekend!

#2- ”Poppin’ New Trailer” The newest Jim Carrey movie based on the 1938 beloved classic tale “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” has launched a new trailer, and it is poppin’! This film looks to be plenty of fun and reminiscent of some of Carrey’s older style (an attraction to some, deterrent to others)! Popper tries to balance family, work, life, and now…a fleet of penguins, in this theatrical trailer for Mr. Popper’s Penguins ! It releases on June 17th!

Honestly had not realized until watching this trailer that both Carla Gugino and Clark Gregg co-star in this Arctic Adventure!

#3- “Tree of Life Blooms at Cannes!” This past week’s festivities and feature film viewing at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival showcased several different movies and differing opinions (to be sure). Many movies were picked up and destined for distribution in the U.S. After the mixed reviewed opening of Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life (some viewers actually boo-ed at the ending), Tree of Life received the top award of Cannes and Malick’s film walked away with the Palme d’Or. A great springboard prior to its official theatrical launch this upcoming weekend (May 27). Starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain, here is Yahoo’s description of the film:

The impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950’s following the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.

Congrats to Tree of Life. Look for it in theaters soon.

#4- “Amazing Concept Art for Thor released” Marvel’s Thor thundered into theaters and continues to make the news! A great film! Just recently, Marvel released some of the amazing conceptual art work for the film. Two artists, Michael Kutsche and Craig Shoji show off their amazing work and contribution to the film! Over 40 fantastic pieces including parts from Odin’s vault! The pictures are amazing. Check out these links for the concept art: Michael Kutsche- The Frost Giants Concept Art and Craig Shoji- Asgard, Thor, and more Concept Art. Absolutely stunning and worth a glance or two!

*Thor is in theaters now! Don’t miss it.

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” I Am Number Four ! This film did not do as well in the box office as was hoped for. Click the pic below for my review on this alien adventure! One irony I saw this past week: Commercial aired telling that I Am Number Four releases this week focused solely on the girl with powers (Number 6) instead of the plot, main characters, or anything else. Anything to get people to purchase it, I guess! 🙂

Also releasing this week: Gnomeo and Juliet

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

up next: “Time to Vote Tuesday!” Don’t forget to vote for your 2 favorite JOHNNY DEPP roles on last week’s poll, it closes tonite!

  1. Happy Monday Spidey!!

Great news post, very informative. Looks like you had the same kind of feeling from ‘I am Number 4’ as I. Although I was a wee bit harsher in my review!!

I got that Gnomeo and Juliet review up for you….hehe Its another shocking write up. I do seem to be a bit harsh lately!!

Hope you have a great day, looking forward to the results of the Poll!!

    • Happy Monday to you as well! Thanks for the compliment.

After work I will be sure to check out your review for I Am Number 4! If you don’t mind, send me the link??

Glad to see someone has a Gnomeo and Juliet review! I will have to find it also and possibly post the link for that. Have a great day too!

  2. Sorry matey, My webby blew up today. My hosts could not cope with the amount of traffic me getting onto the front page of IMDb sent.

I am now looking for a new host!!

  3. Yo Spidey. Have you ever considered going to some of these film festivals and giving us your thoughts? just curious. =)

    • I have considered it. But I missed the NM one due to conflicting schedules. I would love to be able to do that and am trying to make plans for the next ones! To go to Cannes would be the, how do they say?, the Bee’s Knees! (what does that even mean??) Thanks for asking, Megaman!

  4. Sheesh, this Pirates franchise just keeps going on and on… now we’ll never see the end of it 😦 I just left you a comment on your Pirates review why I feel this way.

But yay for Malick and Tree of Life. I can’t wait to see the film.

Oh and those concept art for THOR are amaaaazing! Thanks for sharing that, T.

    • isn’t that concept art absolutely awesome!??! Wow! glad that you liked it!

I am a little concerned about the reported lack of more (and questionably necessary??) dialogue in Tree of Life. but, we’ll see. I am still anxious to check it out, if for nothing else, to satisfy my curiousity.

  5. I Am Number 4 is the worst movie I’ve seen this year… I don’t understand why the bad guys have to kill these teens in numerical order. And when Number 6 shows up, she’s INVULNERABLE because the villains are still at Number 4! :/

  6. Can’t wait to see the tree of life. I didn’t expect Pirates to do that well as I’ve heard it isn’t that good. Maybe I’ll see what all the fuss is about.

      • The box office earnings for all the Pirates movies are truly crazy… and these movies are critics-proof at this point. (Just like Harry Potter) It could have 0% on RottenTomatoes and still make $300M in one weekend.
