Movie News Monday for May 30, 2011!

May 30, 2011

First off, Happy Memorial Day!! Today here in the U.S., we take time to remember and thank those that have sacrificed and served in the armed forces protecting those things we hold most sacred and dear. Thank you to all of them and their families!

Secondly, welcome to “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)! What is ‘MNM’ all about, you ask?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.” Well, this weekend proved to be an impressive one in the box office as The Hangover Part II exceeded expectations and previous record holders. It now is the BIGGEST comedy of all time, and, after Monday, is expected to be the biggest 5-day total for any R-rated film ever. (Currently held by Matrix: Reloaded with $134.3 million.) The Hangover Part II is expected to reach $138.1 million by the end of Monday! The Hangover Part II grossed over $118 million since its release on Thursday.

Here are the weekend’s estimated actual results for Fri, May 27-Sun, May 29:

  1. The Hangover Part II ~$86.5 million
  2. Kung Fu Panda 2 ~$48 million
  3. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ~$39.3 million
  4. Bridesmaids ~$16.4 million
  5. Thor ~$9.4 million
  6. Fast Five ~$6.6 million
  7. Midnight in Paris ~$1.9 million
  8. Jumping The Broom ~$1.9 million
  9. Something Borrowed ~$1.8 million
  10. Rio ~$1.7 million

Director Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain grossed ~$352,000 in just 4 theaters!!! Wow!!

*The sequels claimed the top 3 spots! You may recall my statement from last week: “Congrats to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides…but don’t expect to stay on top with The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2 releasing this upcoming weekend!” 🙂 Congrats to the Wolf Pack!

#2- ”Jackie Chan’s 100th” I had no idea that Jackie Chan had made so many movies, but here is a first sneak peek at his 100th, 1911. A film that focuses on the founding of the Republic of China when Sun Yat-sen and his forces overthrew the Qing Dynasty.

Director Zhang Li, who also directed the epic tale Red Cliff, co-directed with Jackie Chan to produce this epic story. It is expected to release both in China and in the United States on October 11, 2011. What an accomplishment, Jackie Chan! 100 movies in the centennial year of the Republic of China.

#3- “Stan Lee Out, Wolverine In.” With X-Men: First Class releasing this weekend comes some sad news. Stan Lee announced that he does not have a cameo appearance in this origin film. Claiming that the filming locations were all too far away. (?) However, perhaps another cameo would make up for it:

Wolverine.

Yes!! played by Hugh Jackman. Due to his slow aging, there is no issue with him appearing back in the 1960’s. I will spare you the spoiler of the cameo details, but rest assured, his attitude, language, and brashness will be seen! Details HERE if you JUST have to spoil it for yourself! 😉

Well, I will miss looking for Stan Lee in the film (or perhaps he’s trying to trick us and will still really be in the movie), but Wolverine is an acceptable trade off! Here is a fun clip from the movie featuring Magneto showcasing some of his might and manner! Enjoy! Class is in session this weekend!!

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” Biutiful, starring Javier Bardem and nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film of the Year and Best Performance by Actor in a Leading Role. Biutiful tells the story of a damaged man and father seeking redemption on a dark road in life.

Also releasing this week: Drive Angry (Nicolas Cage’s supernatural flop!) and Passion Play (after just launching in theaters on May 6!!!…starring Mickey Rourke, Bill Murray, Megan Fox).

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

Jackie Chan has done a hundred movies?? WOW! That guy is productive! I have high respect for him as he’s actually a much better actor than people give him credit for, but he takes roles like in Rush Hour so he can make smaller films that are more personal to him, such as this one. Did you know he’s an accomplished musician as well, his talents clearly know no bounds!
