This is the first Monday of June! So, let’s start it off right!, “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”) is here! On with the show!!
What is ‘MNM’ all about, you ask (aside from being a delicious candy)?
In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!
This Just In!!…
#1- “The Weekend Winner.” Only one wide release was new to the theatrical entourage this past weekend…and it claimed the #1 spot! X-Men: First Class truly was “Mutant and Proud” as it stood tall above the rest this past weekend. It is, however, the lowest debut weekend of any of the X-Men movies to date. According to boxofficemojo, when accounting for ticket price inflation, the other X-Men films all exceeded what this one did in the box office, including X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which debuted at $85.1 million)!
Congrats though to Xavier and his classmates! Click HERE to watch First Fans discuss their initial thoughts on X-Men: First Class!
Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, June 3-Sun, June 5:
- X-Men: First Class ~$56 million (NEW RELEASE)
- The Hangover Part II ~$32 million
- Kung Fu Panda 2 ~$24.3 million
- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ~$18 million
- Bridesmaids ~$12.2 million
- Thor ~$4.2 million
- Fast Five ~$3.2 million
- Midnight in Paris ~$2.9 million
- Jumping The Broom ~$865,000
- Something Borrowed ~$835,000
*Limited released film to keep an eye on: The Tree of Life. Opening weekend (May 27-29) in only 4 theaters earned $372,000 (#15). June 3-5 in 20 theaters earned $621,000 (#13). Have you seen it yet?
#2- ”Breaking Dawn Trailer Breaks Out!” In case you missed the MTV Movie Awards last night, the highly anticipated trailer for Part one of the final act of the Twilight series premiered. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 releases on November 18, 2011, and Bella finally gets to grow up like she’s wanted all this time. Whoop-dee-do! Sorry, it’s the “Kristen-Stewart’s-acting” hater in me! Check out the trailer.
Believe it or not, I am glad that this film is coming out soon! Because that means Part 2 will be close behind, and then…the END of Twilight madness! 😀
Hopefully, Kristen Stewart’s Snow White and the Huntsman with Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron will give me a reason to give Stewart’s acting a nod or two in June 2012 before BD: Part 2 launches in Nov2012. Just one and a half years remain of twi-hard and boy-wolf madness! 😉
#3- “Denzel Set To Take Flight” Many movie-lovers, including myself, may have been wondering about where Denzel Washington has gone! No films throughout all of 2011, after a great couple of films in 2010 (The Book of Eli, Unstoppable) and an unparalleled resume past that! Well here’s a quick look at an upcoming project that Denzel has now attached himself to, a movie simply entitled Flight.
“a commercial airline pilot named Whip Whitaker. When his plane malfunctions and a crash seems imminent, he saves the day with some heroic flying and manages to land the plane with minimal casualties. He’s instantly hailed as a hero, but as an investigation into the cause of the crash unfolds, it becomes clear that he was flying under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The film is the pilot’s journey as he is encouraged to wear a hero label he thinks he doesn’t deserve, while the pilot’s union and airline try to keep the facts under cover because of the high stakes involved.”
Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis is set to direct. After producing or directing some great movies of the past (Contact, Castaway, Back to the Future I-III, and Forrest Gump), Zemeckis moved on to some rather questionable flops such as Mars Needs Moms, Beowolf, and A Christmas Carol (with Jim Carrey). It is good to see him get back into the live-action films. He is currently producing Real Steel with Hugh Jackman and will then focus on Flight for a Fall 2012 release!
#4- “Hailee possibly selected to carry Carrie!” Recent rumors claim that Hailee Steinfeld (the young heroine from True Grit) is highly probable to be the one to play Carrie in the upcoming remake of the Stephen King classic. Others have campaigned for the role such as Megan Fox…and even Stephen King himself stated that he would like to see Lindsey Lohan cast! SMH. (Read King’s interesting statement on his thoughts on a Carrie remake, and Lohan for that matter, HERE.) However, according to CinemaBlend, “proven sources” are saying that Hailee Steinfeld is in the crosshairs of the casting directors for the lead role in the remake.
Many people’s stance (including mine) appears to be: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” But Hollywood is as Hollywood does! and what does Hollywood do?: REMAKES! Sound off, let’s hear your thoughts! King himself said that the original movie was better than even the book!! Can a remake claim that rare feat of glory? Even with the talented Hailee Steinfeld?
#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” True Grit, starring Hailee Steinfeld, Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and more! Directed by the Coen Bros, and nominated for an astounding TEN Oscars this remake of a classic is one that The Duke would be proud of! *Also releasing this week: Just Go With It. Another Adam Sandler movie which I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed! Also starring the gorgeous Jennifer Aniston, winner of the “Decade of Hotness Award” at Saturday night’s Guys Choice Awards! Cannot wait to purchase this one as well! Check out the review by clicking the picture below!
Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”
