Movie News Monday for July 4, 2011!

Happy 4th of July, everyone! For those of you from American shores, this is the day we celebrate the birthday of The United States of America! May God bless America! Everyone loves a good “rise up and fight” story, i.e. The Patriot, Gladiator, Braveheart, Spartacus, The Last Samurai, 300, V for Vendetta, Saving Private Ryan, etc. July 4, 1776 was one of the most daring days in history as 55 men signed a treasonous document declaring independence for this nation. It took some guts!

Speaking of guts. It might take some guts for some people to admit that Transformer 3 really is “more than meets the eye!”, but regardless…it is! 🙂 Last week’s poll on “Time to Vote Tuesday!” asked you to predict how much T3 would earn from Tuesday to Sunday. Only 9 of you dared to place a vote! (??) But the results are in! You’ll see them down below!

But FIRST!! Welcome to “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!

What is ‘MNM’ all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.” This past weekend, Transformers: Dark of the Moon allowed Autobots and Decepticons to invade theaters and dominate the box office. Starting with its release on Tuesday and ending with Sunday, the total that Transformers 3 earned in the box office equaled $162 million which gives it the title of the 9th highest grossing movie over a 5-day stretch.

(Click HERE for Tuesday’s poll…no one voted for the correct bracket). It beat Transformers by $30m, but Revenge of the Fallen actually earned $200m during its 5-day debut! For the 3 days of the weekend it earned the highest amount for any weekend so far of 2011!

In other box office news: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hit the $1 Billion mark worldwide this past weekend after just 6 weeks in theaters!

Which of the movies did YOU see this weekend?

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, July 1-Sun, July 3:

  1. Transformers: Dark of the Moon ~$97.4 million (NEW RELEASE)
  2. Cars 2 ~$25 million
  3. Bad Teacher ~$14 million
  4. Larry Crowne ~$13 million (NEW RELEASE)
  5. Monte Carlo ~$7.6 million (NEW RELEASE)
  6. Super 8 ~$7.5 million
  7. Green Lantern ~$6.3 million (70% drop from previous wknd!)
  8. Mr. Popper’s Penguins ~$5.1 million
  9. Bridesmaids ~$3.5 million
  10. Midnight in Paris ~$3.4 million

Congrats to Michael Bay, Optimus Prime, and crew!

#2- “G.I. Joe 2 Casting News” While several main characters from the first film will not be returning to the franchise, it’s recently been announced that Channing Tatum, Ray Park, and Byung-hun Lee would be. In addition to them, I previously reported to you that they would be joined by Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, RZA as Blind Master, D.J. Cotrona as Flint, and Elodie Yung as Jinx. Well, today another character is added to the mix.

Welcome: Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye! The teams covert operations specialist. Palicki was working as Wonder Woman in the television series that was set to air, but the show got dropped by NBC…so on to bigger and better things!

One more major role still has yet to be cast: Joe Colton, the original G.I. Joe. According to reports from Deadline, Bruce Willis is being considered for the part. We’ll see. G.I Joe 2: Cobra Strikes comes out in August 2012.

#3- “From Fast and Furious to Transformers to Marvel?” Tyrese Gibson! His acting skills may seem a bit questionable at times. Always the supporting role, could you see him as the lead actor for a superhero film? Currently Gibson is pushing for a Luke Cage movie to be made starring…well, of course…him (click HERE to see him issue his challenge to Marvel).

Luke Cage is one of the original Marvel superheroes and has quite the following and Tyrese is campaigning for his movie to be made. But he’s not the only one hopeful for the spot. Old Spice Commercial phenomenon Isaiah Mustafa already has a trailer out for it!

Well, we shall have to wait and see on this one. Remember, Patrick Dempsey is still pushing for Doctor Strange!

Which would you rather see have their own movie? Luke Cage or Doctor Strange?

#4- “Underworld 4 Underground no more!” Not much info has surfaced in regards to Underworld 4 over the past couple of months! Details have remained underground. But information has reached the masses that those attending San Diego’s Comic-Con later this month will get to see more as Underworld 4 will make an appearance in Hall H on Friday, July 22 from 1:30pm-2pm! (Cast and crew members from The Immortals will also be in Hall H!)

Marvel may not be there but at least Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, and Theo James will be. So will producer Len Wiseman and the directors of the film Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein.

Thank you Sony Screen Gems! Man, I wish I was headed to Comic-Con! Are you going?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” umm, wow! There are none! No new releases for me to guide you to this week on Blu-ray! Pick wisely my friends!

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!” Enjoy your 4th of July!!!!

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

  1. Happy 4th of July, I remember being in the U.S. in 2005, we were canooing on a lake in Rhode Island, it was magical. I have absolutely no interest in seeing the new Transformers but Darren’s piece on how Bay uses it to flog his own politics is interesting and informative. Thanks for the update T.

    • Happy 4th to you Ronan! Canooing sound like a lot of fun. But that is a lot more north than where I live! haha.

I just finished 7 days of work and am glad for a day off. I’ll be sure to stop by filmplicity to see how the blogathon is going! Thanks for commenting!

  2. Hope you had a nice Fourth, T. It was a hectic one for me with friends over from out of town, but very fun nonetheless.

Btw, did you get my email about the widget thing? Sorry I can’t be much help as I’m quite busy trying to juggle work & blogging as well.

    • I did have a good fourth, but, like you, it was very hectic. Worked all the way through it. (retail=working when everyone else is off). ha. Glad you had fun!

I did indeed get your email. and thank you for it. I’ve decided to try to go a different route. I’m working on it now! we’ll see! thanks so much my friend!! I meant to call you for the 4th too and I just let time get away. Glad you had a great one!
