Movie News Monday for July 25, 2011!

July 25, 2011

Welcome back to “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!

Well, San Diego Comic Con 2011 is officially over! Wow, and wouldn’t you know, one of my friends, Ruth over at Flixchatter was there! She got to see a lot of big movie panels and even meet Captain America in the flesh! Don’t miss her exciting play-by-play posts from her time at Comic Con. Visit her page HERE.

On to ‘MNM!’ What is ‘MNM’ all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.” On the TheScarletSp1der’s FACEBOOK page, I asked for votes on if Captain America: The First Avenger would beat Harry Potter 7.2 this past weekend in overall sales. Some of you doubted if the First Avenger had what it took to dethrone the wizard! Did you vote for the right side? Here are the results to the star-studded movie weekend! Check it out.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, July 22-Sun, July 24:

  1. Captain America: The First Avenger ~$65.8 million (NEW RELEASE)
  2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ~$48.1 million
  3. Friends With Benefits ~$18.5 million (NEW RELEASE)
  4. Transformers: Dark of the Moon ~$12 million
  5. Horrible Bosses ~$11.7 million
  6. Zookeeper ~$8.7 million
  7. Cars 2 ~$5.7 million
  8. Winnie the Pooh ~$5.1 million
  9. Bad Teacher ~$2.6 million
  10. Midnight in Paris ~$1.9 million

Even though Captain America claims the highest Superhero movie weekend debut of 2011, the highest weekend debut of 2011 so far is still Harry Potter 7.2 with its $169 million debut! But today, the crown still goes to Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger !

What did you watch this weekend? I watched Captain America 3 times!! 🙂

#2- “No ‘Super’ ending for 2012.” December 2012 was the released date for director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, and more. Just this last week, rumors began to spread that the script was in for a rewrite. Shortly after the rumors hit it was announced that the release date for Man of Steel has been pushed back to June 2013. Producer Christopher Nolan will now have 2 summer blockbusters in 2 years!

Look for Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel to fly into theaters on June 14, 2013. Currently no other movie is scheduled for release on the same day. A little disappointed…yes. I was looking forward to having 2012 be full of superheroes: The Amazing Spiderman, The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Man of Steel.  2 D.C. movies and 2 Marvel movies!

Speaking of Henry Cavill. Check out this newest poster for the upcoming film Immortals which releases on 11-11-11.

#3- “Time is Money, literally!” Comic Con shed some more light on a lot of different movies. One of those movies was In Time starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, Olivia Wilde, Alex Pettyfer, and more. Wow! Remember the posters and stills from Friday’s post?

Well, now, check out the footage they showed at Comic Con.

Looks interesting! What do you think? In Time releases on October 28, 2011.

#4- “Trading One Hat for Another…for another!” Harrison Ford traded in his iconic Indiana Jones hat to wear a tan cowboy hat in the exciting film Cowboys & Aliens that releases this weekend with its ensemble cast and crew!

Well, get ready, because Ford is about to trade in that hat for another. A black one. Ford is currently attached to a movie project based on the fictional novel entitled “Black Hats” that features a story of Wyatt Earp and Al Capone!

The book, written by Patrick Culhane (a pen name for author Max Allan Collins) will have Wyatt Earp (Ford) working with his former deputy Bat Matesrson to assist the son of Doc Holliday who has now gotten in a mess with Al Capone and his gang! (fyi, Collins also wrote Road to Perdition starring Tom Hanks and Jude Law). Click the picture below to see a more in depth description of the novel itself!

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week pick up the following film on Blu-ray to add to your collection. To read the review on the title, click on the respective picture!

Source Code -Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a “time traveling” soldier who must repeat a mission until he gets it right. The fate of the world depends on it! A sci-fi thriller.

I watched this one, but just couldn’t get around to finishing my review on it. Not sure what I thought about it. It was a bit repetitive, but director Duncan Jones (Moon) and Gyllenhaal’s performance worked well in this movie! Click the picture below to read a review over at Anomalous Material if you wish, courtesy Sam!

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

I’m a bit surprised that Harry Potter didn’t put up more of a fight but I guess that was to be expected after the insane rush on the first weekend. I think it will last longer in theaters eventually than Captain America or Cowboys & Aliens.

Looking forward to see Source Code as I skipped it when it was in theater.

Source Code is a good one Castor, I mean coming from a non-Jake Gyllenhaal fan, that’s saying something 🙂

I haven’t got around to reviewing it yet, just too much going on lately.

I actually didn’t really enjoy it too much. but it was okay. I’d be interested in seeing a review on it if you get a chance.

yep. HP did drop down after the initial mad rush. but it still did great. It may stay longer, you’re right, but Captain America was just so great!

Let me know what you think of Source Code.

Yay for Capt. America. I’m reading your review next but I already agree w/ your rating, I think it deserves at least a 4 out of 5 as it really was a worthy effort from everyone involved. Perhaps I’m a bit biased as I saw it the night after actually meeting Chris Evans, but then again I think I’d have liked it as much even if that wasn’t the case. He seems like a genuinely nice, down-to-earth guy, I think someone like Colin Farrell wouldn’t be a good fit, y’know what I mean, he’s perfect as a vampire though 🙂

Boo for Man of Steel! As if it weren’t long enough wait as it is… I saw an interview that Henry is raring to go and boy, do I share that sentiment. I know he’ll make a great Superman. Come on Warner Bros, just get on with it already!!

I am bummed that Man of Steel won’t be out next year, but I hope that they just make it that much better.

ha! can you imagine if Farrell tried out for Captain America?! that’d be a major no-no! lol

Ahah, I think he knows himself enough he’s not cut out for such a role. Farrell was quite funny that he poked fun at himself during the panel, he said he thought he was playing a superhero in ‘Alexander’ but clearly it didn’t pan out 😀 I became more of a fan now after seeing him at comic-con.
