Movie News Monday for August 22, 2011!

Today is not just Monday! Today is “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)! I’m glad you’re here!

What is ‘MNM’ all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.” Four new releases entered the box office arena this past week once again (just like last week) and, not a single one of them won the #1 spot (just like last week). Wow. Conan didn’t fight it’s way to the top. Fright Night couldn’t bite it’s way to the top. Instead Emma Stone and company just HELP-ed their way to the #1 spot this past weekend.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Aug 19-Sun, Aug 21:

  1. The Help ~$20.5 million
  2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes ~$16.3 million
  3. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World ~$12 million (NEW RELEASE)
  4. Conan the Barbarian ~$10 million (NEW RELEASE)
  5. The Smurfs ~$8 million
  6. Fright Night ~$7.9 million (NEW RELEASE)
  7. Final Destination 5 ~$7.7 million
  8. 30 Minutes or Less ~$6.3 million
  9. One Day ~$5.1 million (NEW RELEASE)
  10. Crazy Stupid Love ~$4.95 million

Congratulations to The Help ! See, I told you to go see it! 🙂

#2-Underworld: Awakening, Poster and Trailer!” A fan of the Underworld series? I am. Check out the first teaser poster for the January 2012 release. Underworld Evolution in 3D stars Kate Beckinsale as Selene after being in a comatose state for 15 years..only to wake up and realize that her fight now must face another front. And on top of that, she has a teenage Vampire/Lycan hybrid daughter! Talk about a wake-up call!

The vampire saga continues on January 20, 2012.

#3- “A Monster-filled Cast!” Details have come forth in regards to Pixar’s upcoming film, Monster University (the planned prequel to 2001’s great success Monsters, Inc).

Not only has it been confirmed that Billy Crystal and John Goodman will be returning to voice the beloved characters Mike Wazowski and Sully, but also, Steve Buscemi will be returning to voice Randall Boggs (the competitive chameleon in Monster’s Inc.)! Also adding their vocal talent to the monster team: Dave Foley (Flick in A Bug’s Life), Peter Sohn (Emile in Ratatoille), and others!!

For a look at some of the synopsis, take a look here at part of the report from the presentation at the D23 Expo that posted:

According to the director, Sully and Mike have actually known each other since grade school, but actually have always hated each other. Both are accepted into Monsters University and are upset about the other one attending the same school. What’s interesting is that both monsters are training to become scarers, which is equivalent to being an astronaut or a football star in the monsters universe.

The presentation also included plenty of concept art, which included not only looks at the Monsters University campus, but also character designs. Considerably younger, Mike and Sully both looks considerably different. Sully is shorter, skinnier and shaggier (like many college freshman) while Mike is smaller and wears a retainer. The campus itself is huge, and made to fit creatures of all sizes (Scanlon says that doors and stairways have been constructed in many different shapes). The school for scarers is one of the oldest on campus and has a huge green dome with spikes. As for the other students, there are many cliques including cheerleaders, jocks, goths and nerds. The school also has a mascot called “Archie The Scare Pig” which looks like a strange deformed, monster version of a pig.

Pixar announced more info on other upcoming projects, but Monster’s University is scheduled currently for a June 21, 2013 release! Too Far Away!!!!

#4- “Willis says ‘Go, Joe!'” Bruce Willis has been confirmed as part of the cast now for the upcoming sequel to G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. Willis will be partnering up with Director Jon Chu and a wide array of actors (including Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Elodie Yung, Ray Park, Rza, and more) for the sequel entitled G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation.

Willis is to play the part of the original G.I. Joe, General Joe Colton in the sequel that is set to release in theaters on June 29, 2012. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first one, but I like the way the second one is shaping up. I’ll reserve judgment though, until more info comes out.

What are your thoughts? is Willis a “win” for Joe?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following film on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Jane Eyre, starring Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, and Jamie Bell. The tale of a quiet governess who softens the heart of the gruff Mr. Rochester. See the classic tale retold. For a great review from my friend Ruth at Flixchatter, click the picture below!

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

up next: “Time to Vote Tuesday!” Don’t forget the vital vote for our Movie Making Project!!! It closes tonite! vote HERE

  1. Glad for The Help to hit number one, as for Conan, ouch! That’s as big a bomb as Cowboys & Aliens I think given their $90 mil budget.

I’m curious to see what Pixar does w/ Monster Inc 2, I like the first one a lot (LOVE Mr. Wazowski) so I hope they do the original justice.

Oh and THANK YOU for the link to me JE review, how very kind of you my friend.

    • “flops! flops! flops! flops, flops! EVERYBODY!” (to the tune of shots! shots! shots! shots shots!) hahaha

I am excited to see Underworld 4, just hoping it stays pretty true to the rest of the series.

    • true enough, for Apes.

But I was really glad for The Help being that it wasn’t a new release but took #1. In it’s first week it did about $25 million, and in it’s second week it did $20 million!! Impressive.
