Movie News Monday for September 26, 2011!

September 26, 2011

You know what day it is!! “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”) has arrived!! 🙂

What is ‘MNM’ all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  With so many new releases this past weekend at the box office I sure was curious to see who would be on top. Would Moneyball knock it out of the park? Would Abduction kidnap the attention of most of the viewers? Would Killer Elite assassinate the competition in the box office contest? Would Dolphin Tale swim into the hearts of the biggest audiences? or Would The Lion King sound off its mighty roar for the second weekend in a row for all to hear? Well, check it out below!

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Sept 23-Sun, Sept 25 (as per Box Office Mojo):

  1. The Lion King 3D ~$22.1 million
  2. Moneyball ~$20.6 million (NEW RELEASE)
  3. Dolphin Tale ~$20.2 million (NEW RELEASE)
  4. Abduction ~$11.2 million (NEW RELEASE)
  5. Killer Elite ~$9.5 million (NEW RELEASE)
  6. Contagion ~$8.6 million
  7. Drive ~$5.8 million
  8. The Help ~$4.4 million
  9. Straw Dogs ~$2.1 million
  10. I Don’t Know How She Does It ~$2.05 million

Both Machine Gun Preacher and Puncture had limited releases this past weekend (only 4 theaters each), look to see them climb up the charts as time goes on!

Congratulations, once again, to The Lion King! If you haven’t seen it yet, this is the last week it will be in theaters before its Blu-Ray release!

#2- “Shedding some light on Dark Shadows. Dark Shadows, director Tim Burton’s latest project starring Johnny Depp, now has an official photo release showing the cast, including Depp. Dark Shadows tells the tale of the life of Barnabas Collins (Depp), a vampire, and his different encounters with various monsters and beings in a gothic horror tale the includes witches, werewolves, ghosts, and more. Based on the original tv series starring Jonathan Frid (Click HERE), Depp plays Collins who has been awakened in the 1970s after two centuries of having been buried alive!

Here’s a look at Barnabas Collins and his family and “friends.”

Courtesy ReelzChannel:

“From left they include live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter); rebellious teenager Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz) Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green), the witch that cursed Barnabas into being a vampire; lonely and ignored 10-year-old David Collins (Gulliver McGrath), David’s governness Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcoate); the maid Mrs. Johnson (Ray Shirley) who is “mostly blind” and “mostly deaf” according to Grahame-Smith; caretaker Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Hayley); Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller), father to David and described as “creepy” and “self-centered” by Grahame-Smith; and, finally, Roger’s sister and Collins family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer), the mother of Carolyn and a mother-figure to David. Grahame-Smith described Elizabeth as “the rock of the family” and could be the most normal, though the writer admits: “I wouldn’t say there is a normal person in this photo.”

And, of course, Depp is in the middle.

This photo set seems to remind me of Twilight. Tell me I’m wrong! haha

Dark Shadows is currently in production and is scheduled for a May 11, 2012 release.

#3- The Last Son of Krypton gets a new mommy!” Man of Steel, Zack Snyder’s upcoming project starring Henry Cavill as Superman, has already begun filming, but a last minute change in the cast has surprised a few people. Julia Ormond had originally been cast as Lara Lor-Van, the wife of Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and mother of Kal-el/Superman (Henry Cavill), but she has been replaced in a last minute cast change by Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer.

Currently, very little news is available as to the reason for the last minute change. Movie watchers may recognize Zurer from films such as Angels & Demons and Munich. According to Deadline, Zurer is confirmed to begin filming this week.

Man of Steel also stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Russell Crowe (Jor-el), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Christopher Meloni (Colonel Hardy), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), and others. It is scheduled to release in theaters on June 14, 2013.

#4- “A Robo-whaaa??” When I first heard of the RoboCop remake, that was my very first response. “A Robo-whaaa??” haha!

Last march, Brazilian director José Padilha signed up to do the project and has stated this past week that he wants Michael Fassbender to play the title role! Fassbender is a great goal for Padilha to sign on to the project! Why?

  1. Fassbender’s ever-growing popularity will bring viewers who now are too young to know anything about RoboCop
  2. Fassbender seems to enjoy scifi and action roles (X-Men: First Class, Prometheus, Inglourious Basterds, 300, Centurion)
  3. Fassbender can make RoboCop cool once again!

Padilha hopes to be meeting with Michael Fassbender here soon to discuss the possibilities. I would expect an agreement to be made, but Padilha better hurry before his schedule fills up too fast!

Thoughts?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon– The third installment of the series of those that are “more than meets the eye” will release on blu-ray this week! September 30th! Don’t wait to get your copy of this one! But, if you’re hoping to buy it in 3D, you will have to wait until later this year (probably November). Click the poster below for my review of the film!

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

Michael Fassbender as Robocop ahahah. That would be good casting for the filmmakers but probably a waste of his talent. Still have to check out Moneyball (hopefully tomorrow!).

Robocop? I guess as far as remakes go, that one actually makes some sense.
Dark Shadows doesn’t interest me. The vampires/ werewolves idea has been highly saturated lately. Burton seems to be coming late to the party.

Lion King still on top is really not that surprising when you think about it. The generation who saw it in 94 as kids now have kids of their own and want them to have the same experience.

As for the Blu-ray release….. let me know when Harry Potter 8 is released on blu-ray. Then I will buy. For now, my Star Wars bluray set will have to do.

You’re not wrong. That “Dark Shadows” pic does bear similarities to the “Twilight” ones you showed. LOL. Nice eye!
