Yes, the weekend is OVER! And in case you have a case of the “mondays,” cheer up! because at least ONE thing about Mondays is always sure to be great! And you know what that is!! “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”) has arrived!! 🙂
What is ‘MNM’ all about?
In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!
This Just In!!…
#1- “The Weekend Winner.” What is up with new releases this year? It’s beginning to be a regular occurrence seeing new releases not claiming the #1 spot in the box office. Wow. Well, it happened again. 50/50 did so-so in beating out the other new releases of this past weekend, but the biggest surprise overall is which film DID end up swimming to the top of the charts. Moneyball initially looked like it was going to score again, but it dropped the ball. Check out the rather lackluster results below!
Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Sept 30-Sun, Oct 2 (as per Box Office Mojo):
- Dolphin Tale ~$14.2 million
- Moneyball ~$12.5 million
- The Lion King 3D ~$11 million
- 50/50 ~$8.9 million (NEW RELEASE)
- Courageous ~$8.8 million(NEW RELEASE)
- Dream House ~$8.2 million (NEW RELEASE)
- Abduction ~$5.65 million
- What’s Your Number? ~$5.6 million (NEW RELEASE)
- Contagion ~$5.04 million
- Killer Elite ~$4.86 million
The Help gracefully left the top ten this past weekend after 8 weeks on the list. And so did I Don’t Know How She Does It after only 2! haha!
Ironically, the limited release of Take Shelter in 3 theaters outperformed Conan the Barbarian 3D in 115 theaters! Keep your eye on that one!
#2- “The Latest Development.“ It’s true. The television series Arrested Development never really got the major attention I felt it deserved until it was off the air. 3 seasons and producer/director Ron Howard’s comedy series was canceled with rumors of a movie ever circling the web. The producers and cast, much to delight of their fans, seemed to be all for a movie based on the series and rumors about a film continued.
They found, however, that after 5 years of not being on the air, there was too much backstory material to ignore. It would not suffice to just make a movie. So, that being said, a mini-season of 9-10 episodes will be made to serve as re-introduction and catch up. Each of the episodes will revolve around a different main character until everyone’s stories are caught up to date…followed by the full-length feature film!
So, there you have it! You waited and asked for it, and now it’s coming! As a fan of the show myself, I’m excited that Arrested Development is not only returning for a movie, but also for a short season prior to! Welcome back, Bluth family!
The Arrested Development season 4 and movie still have no official release date, but it looks like 2013 will be the year that we welcome back Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Will Arnett, Portia DeRossi, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Tony Hale, and Alia Shawkat into our homes…and theaters!
#3- “Despicable…AGAIN!” Despicable Me 2 is on it’s way! Say Whaaat?!(Press “PLAY”, you know you want to!!)
Had a feeling we would be seeing Despicable Me 2 sometime in the near future! Take a look at the promo poster for it:Scheduled to release July 3, 2013. Though unconfirmed at this moment, I expected Steve Carell, Russell Brand, and several others of the original cast to return.
#4- “Get (back) Over Here!” Wow! How old is the Mortal Kombat franchise? Well, after the horrible monstrosity that MK: Annihilation was, didn’t think it would ever pick up enough popularity once again to make it to the big screen. This was, of course, until the first promotional trailer for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth hit the web last year. Followed by a 10-part web series with recognizable actors from the promo, many felt that the Kombat was worthy of another shot at the big screen. But would any company dare to take a chance on it?
Having hired Oren Uziel (writer for the web series) to write the script, and Kevin Tancharoen (director for the web series) to direct the film, New Line Cinema (owned by Warner Bros.) has accepted the challenged and looks to bring a Mortal Kombat reboot film to theaters in 2013. I sure hope, for their sake, that they obtain all of the actors they used in the web series for continuity and fan-enjoyment! Plot details and more still to come, but Mortal Kombat fans everywhere must be excited about this!
#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:
Fast Five– Vin Diesel and Paul Walker meet up with others of their crew and some extra “pals” in this fifth exciting installment of the car series that is turning into more of an action heist series! I enjoyed this film. Click HERE for my review of the film!
Lion King– (3D and non-3D). Also releasing this week on Blu-ray. The diamond edition. Also releasing will be an 8-disc Lion King trilogy set (Lion King, Lion King 1-1/2, Lion King 2). This one is, of course, a classic, and belongs in everyone’s homes! Pick it up this week!
Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”
Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!
up next: “Time to Vote Tuesday!”
