Welcome back to the start of your week and another exciting edition of (you guessed it!!)…“Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!! 🙂
What is ‘MNM’ all about?
In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!
This Just In!!…
#1- “The Weekend Winner.” This past weekend the #1 spot in the box office scared many moviegoers! So many, in fact, that it claimed the title as the highest opening fall movie (Sept/Oct) of all time! Unfortunately, the other new releases this past weekend didn’t have as great of a debut as they would’ve wished. Paranormal Activity 3 (which is actually a prequel) even outdid PA2 on its debut weekend (PA2 earned $40.7 million at open). People love to be scared!
Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Oct 21-Sun, Oct 23 (as per Box Office Mojo):
- Paranormal Activity 3 ~$54 million (NEW RELEASE)
- Real Steel ~$11.3 million
- Footloose ~$10.85 million
- The Three Musketeers ~$8.8 million (NEW RELEASE)
- The Ides of March ~$4.9 million
- Dolphin Tale ~$4.2 million
- Moneyball ~$4.05 million
- Johnny English Reborn ~$3.8 million (NEW RELEASE)
- The Thing ~$3.1 million (#3 last week)
- 50/50 ~$2.8 million
#2- “Django Unchained may capture another star.“ Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino upcoming work in progress (click HERE for info on the film itself) has quite a bit of starpower already in the waiting. The likes of Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, Kurt Russell (who recently replaced Kevin Costner who withdrew himself from the project due to “scheduling issues”) and Don Johnson are already attached to the Tarantino film which is scheduled for a Christmas day release in 2012.
Gordon-Levitt’s impressive resume includes films such as 50/50, the upcoming (although pushed back) Premium Rush, The Dark Knight Rises, and Inception! Confirmation still has yet to be made, but if so, Gordon-Levitt will join an already impressive cast that is set to begin filming in New Orleans in January.
#3- “In the Director’s Chair: Angelina Jolie!” Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut has released it’s first official trailer. Entitled In the Land of Blood and Honey, the film (also written by Jolie) is:
“a melancholy drama set during Bosnia’s 1992-95 civil war and follows a Christian Serb (Goran Kostic) and a Bosniak woman (Zana Marjanovic) whose lives are torn apart when violence flares between ethnic and religious groups.”
Here is the gripping trailer:
Set to release this December 23rd. What do you think of the trailer?
#4- “Akira zooming forward!” The live action film based on the highly popular anime Akira has been the topic of wishes and speculation for, what seems like, ages! Well, the film has been given the go-ahead and filming is scheduled to begin in Spring 2012. Casting, of course, is on the way in order to meet that deadline.
The latest news/rumors state that Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Country Strong) is set to play Kaneda, the main character! (Whew, at least it’s not Zac Efron, like rumor stated earlier this year!) Also supposedly added to the mix: Gary Oldman (Batman Begins, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter). Oldman, reportedly, has been offered the role of the Colonel, and Carter has been offered the role of Lady Miyako.
All you Akira fans may finally get the movie you’ve been wanting for so long! What are your thoughts? Do you like the casting choices?
#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:
One of my absolute favorite films of the summer! Check out Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones and more in this Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer) directed comicbook hero film. Want to know more before buying it? Click HERE for my review of the film! (I noticed Best Buy’s ad offers Thor Blu-ray/Dvd combo for $19.99 with the purchase of any version of Captain America. If you haven’t gotten Thor yet, that’s a great special!)
Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”
Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!
