Movie News Monday for December 12, 2011!

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!! 🙂 What is ‘MNM’all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  This past weekend the #1 spot in the box office was up for grabs among pretty dismal debuts for new wide releases, that went up against the likes of Twilight, The Muppets, and Arthur Christmas!

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Dec 9-Sun, Dec 11:

  1. New Year’s Eve ~$13.7M
  2. The Sitter ~$10M
  3. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (part 1) ~$7.9M
  4. The Muppets ~$7.1M
  5. Arthur Christmas ~$6.6M
  6. Hugo ~$6.1M
  7. The Descendants ~$4.8M
  8. Happy Feet Two ~$3.8M
  9. Jack & Jill ~$3.2M
  10. Immortals ~$2.4M

I have a feeling that we already know which film will be at #1 next weekend looking at this competition. Anyone say: Mission Impossible 4 in its limited IMAX release (Sherlock Holmes 2 will most likely win the box office)??!!

Congratulations to the star-studded cast of New Year’s Eve!

#2- “On Set Photos: Gangster Squad!” Director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) is currently filming an upcoming film entitled Gangster Squad which stars Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Nolte, and several more. Set to hit theaters on October 19, 2012, Gangster Squad centers on Los Angeles in the 1940’s and 1950’s and focuses on the LAPD’s battle to keep East Coast type mafias from spreading their criminal activity to the West Coast regions of Los Angeles. Take a look at the set photos for this upcoming thriller!

#3- “Men In Black 3 Trailer!” I was going to wait until this week’s “Trailer Time Thursday!” to post this but you all get a nice surprise! Earlier today, the trailer for the third part of the series Men In Black launched. The plot is not completely told in the trailer (hooray!) but it is definitely great to see them offer a great sell on Josh Brolin as a younger Tommy Lee Jones in the film! Time travel is added to the mix in this upcoming release!

Check out the first trailer!

A lot more impressive than the movie posters. That’s for sure! Look for MIB3 to release in theaters on May 25, 2012.

#4- “Two SUPER posters!” You may have already seen them, but I MUST spotlight the 2 freshly launched posters for 2 of the superhero films of 2012 that I am definitely anticipating: The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spiderman! Check them out! What do you think?

You already know my love of movie posters! I cannot WAIT to add these to my collection! 😀

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes– The amazing prequel with some fantastic unforgettable moments and acting by Andy Serkis and John Lithcow -accompanied by an almost equally forgettable performance by Frieda Pinto and James Franco (Come on, do you really remember anything from them in this movie?! No! You remember the Apes!) tells the origin story that led into the classic Planet of the Apes! One of my favorite films of the summer! This is a must watch! Click the picture for my review:

Also releasing: (click any title in gold to read my review) Kung Fu Panda 2, Fright Night, and The Rocketeer!!

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

  1. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that Spidey poster! I was gonna post that but turns out I’ve got something else to post so I’m glad you have it here. It’s very atmospheric and I’m diggin’ the darker look, though the banners are decidedly brighter and more cheery looking.

Btw, I’d rather do a GP marathon a thousand times over than seeing NY’s Eve on the big screen, just blech!

  2. Just to clarify – MI:4 only opens on IMax screens this weekend. It opens wide 12/21 (I think thats the date – next Weds) So I expect Sherlock 2 to take the weekend.

How much does it speak to how little I car about MIB3 that I cant even be bothered to watch an embedded trailer? LOL. YAWNNNNN….

    • Haha. U r right on that. Thanks for catching and clarifying. I’ve been ready for MI4 to launch that I jumped the gun and put it into the mix for this wknd despite its limited Imax release. But that could b construed as confusing. So thanks for clarifying!
