Movie News Monday for March 12, 2012!

March 12, 2012

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!!

What is ‘MNM’all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  This past weekend, the #1 spot in the box office did not go to the Disney film with the $250M budget (John Carter)…unfortunately. As a matter of fact, none of the weekend’s 3 wide new releases claimed the top spot. That honor went to last week’s champion for the second time: The Lorax. Which film did you go see this past weekend?

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, March 9-Sun, March 11:

  1. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax ~$39.1M
  2. John Carter ~$30.6M
  3. Project X ~$11.5M
  4. Silent House ~$7.01M
  5. Act of Valor ~$7M
  6. A Thousand Words ~$6.4M
  7. Safe House ~$5M
  8. The Vow ~$4M
  9. This Means War ~$3.75M
  10. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island ~$3.68M

Congrats to The Lorax on its repeat performance!

#2- “Spidey in Space.” Tobey Maguire and his company Material Pictures is set to produce a film soon geared towards young adults. A scifi film, The 5th Wave will be based on a series of books from author Rick Yancy who will be releasing a book trilogy series on which the film will be based here shortly.

As reported by Variety:

[The] series follows a teenager who survives an alien invasion only to search for her brother, who may have been abducted by human-looking extraterrestrials. There’s also a romantic angle, as the heroine is helped by a boy who may also be an alien in disguise.

Not much more is known about the project at this time, but GK Films has obtained the rights for the film and expect to garner a lot more of a following once the book series is released.

What do you think? Are you interested in a “Close Encouters of the Third Kind- Maguire style!”?

#3- “Make Way, Maleficent.” Angelina Jolie’s next project, Maleficent, will tell the tale of the villainess of the classic Sleeping Beauty story–just from Maleficent’s point of view. Jolie is set to star in the titular role, but the project has seen several hiccups on the journey to production.

Now that things seem to be in motion, more casting news has surfaced. Elle Fanning (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Super 8) may play the role of Sleeping Beauty herself (a.k.a. Princess Aurora).

At the moment, this is still speculation and rumor, but it is not far from unlikely.

What do you think? Can the young Fanning make a convincing Sleeping Beauty?

#4- “Epic Marvel Movie Marathon” The Avengers releases here very shortly and I cannot wait. In the spirit of “Marvel madness” AMC Theaters has announced that they will be hosting special viewings of the Marvel films that lead up to The Avengers in select theaters prior to the release of the upcoming epicness! On May 3, select theaters will open their doors and show all the films in order starting at 11:30am all the way through the midnight showing release of The Avengers.

Wow! That’s a ton of movie-watching awesomeness!

According to Collider:

The entire list of participating theaters will be announced on March 16th, at which time tickets for said Ultimate Marvel Marathon showings will be on sale. Limited engagement tickets for a select number of participating theaters will go on sale at 12:01am (PST) Sunday night (3/11) / Monday morning (3/12) for the following theaters:

Boston Common 19         Boston, MA

Burbank 16                    Burbank, CA

Hopefully, this will be available in a city near you. If not, Be on the lookout for the Awesome Assembly of Avengers blog-a-thon event that will be taking place here, hosted by The Focused Filmographer, that week, as we will be looking at each individual Marvel film in detail with expectations listed for The Avengers with several other fantastic bloggers and Marvel fans alike! Are you game for an adventure like this? Can you sit through 12-15 hours of Marvel Movie Watching?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

The Descendants– George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, and several others star in this amazing portrayal of a family in paradise that suffers through family tragedy and work together to overcome and provide for a better future. Winner of so many awards and nominated for many others, be sure to check out one of George Clooney’s greatest performances ever. (Read my REVIEW

Also releasing: The Adventures of Tintin, My Week With Marilyn, Young Adult, and The Three Musketeers (REVIEW).

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

up next: “Time to Vote Tuesday!”

…and my much anticipated Hollywood Fantasy Draft Movie Pitch- starring Liam Neeson, Kate Beckinsale, Elizabeth Banks, Alice Eve, Robert Downey, Jr., Tommy Lee Jones, and directed by Christopher Nolan!

I am not surprised by the box office failure of ‘John Carter.’ Usually big budget films like this, surrounded by a lotta hype usually don’t do too well at the box office. I’ve said this before, I think movie goers and not into another ‘Star Wars’ type of film. Tobey Maguire trying his hand at producing? I am curious to see what he will turn out.

It goes without saying that the Avengers will be an epic box office success.

$40 for all those films in one night!? That is insanely good value! Seriously! I am so shocked by that I don’t remember what I read before or after that!

Agreed. That is until my kids want to join me, then it quickly becomes this with my wife:

“You want to spend how much and be gone for how long?!?”

Great heads up on that Marvel marathon, T.

I’m with you on Clooney’s performance in ‘The Descendents’. Till this, ‘Michael Clayton’, ‘Syriana’, and ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ (even his bit in the ‘Fail Safe’ TV remake) topped that stack.

    Thanks.

I’ve mistaken to see the picture into Dakota Fanning (they are look alike, for sure) It would be interesting to see Fanning as sleepy beauty. And The Descendants for a collection is not a bad idea.
