Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!… #1- “The Weekend Winner.”  This past weekend, the #1 spot in the box office was up for grabs and with 2 comedic wide new releases entering the arena, The 2-weekend-winning Lorax was in for some competition. 21 Jump Street came through to school all other would-be winners of the box office this weekend.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, March 16-Sun, March 18:

  1. 21 Jump Street ~$35M
  2. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax ~$22.8M

  10. This Means War ~$2.1M

Congrats to 21 Jump Street on winning the weekend!

Did you watch 21 Jump Street this past weekend? What were your thoughts?

#2- “Leonidas to Save the White House.” Gerard Butler , star of 2006’s action thriller 300, has signed on to star in Millennium Films’ upcoming action flick entitled Olympus has Fallen.

According to Variety, here is what Olympus has Fallen is about:

Described as “Die Hard” in the White House, [the] story follows a down-on-his-luck ex-Secret Service agent who becomes America’s only hope when 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is taken over by terrorists.

Now, as I seem to recall, there was news this week of the movie for the tv series 24 being delayed. Jack Bauer’s future may be uncertain, but this quick synopsis sure does sound like Season 7, doesn’t it?!

Well, I like the idea of “Die Hard” in the White House (speaking of Die Hard, today is Bruce Willis’ 57th birthday), and Gerard Butler’s return to action is also welcome news.

Set to begin filming this upcoming September, Olympus has Fallen is to release in 2014.

Are you intrigued to watch this upcoming thriller? Leonidas trades in his sword&spear for a gun&badge!

#3- “No Ooze draws ‘Boos’.” Yes, Michael Bay is producing a new reboot for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This comes as somewhat bittersweet news to those that love TMNT but despise Michael Bay. Well, if you didn’t despise Michael Bay before, perhaps his most recent revelation of his project will change your mind.

At the the recent 2012 Nickelodeon Upfront conference Michael Bay announced that the iconic turtles will be an alien race instead of mutated turtles from the famous ooze from which they spawned. And I quote:

When you see this movie, kids will believe one day that these turtles do exist, when we’re done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race, and they’re going to be tough, edgy, funny, and completely lovable.

You can watch his announcement HERE

Depending on your opinion, Michael Bay may have ruined another kids series when he made Transformers 2 and 3 (soon to be 4). I wish someone else was heading up this next “80’s kid” franchise.

Here’s a clue for you, Mr. Bay: The “kids” you should be seeking to impress are the ones that grew up watching TMNT and stay true to the original. Booo, I say, BOOOOOO!

Are you just as excited to watch Teenage ALIEN Ninja Turtles as opposed to the Mutated ones? Share your thoughts.

#4- “New Snow White & the Huntsman trailer impresses!” Out of the 2 Snow White films releasing this year, I am MOST excited to see Snow White & the Huntsman. Even if Kristen Stewart is in it.

The weekend wait for the announced trailer is over. Here it is:

Man! I love the look and feel of this one! June 1, 2012 brings this twisted tale to theaters. In case you don’t know about this film yet, here is the official synopsis:

In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who was dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power.

The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

Are you ready to see Charlize, Chris, and Kristen go at it?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

The Muppets– Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Kermit the Frog, Piggy, and the entire crew show up to bring The Muppets to life! This highly enjoyable family film brings back the magic of the musical muppets in this delightful Academy Award-winning film. Be sure to check out this movie and find out what it takes to be a “Man or a Muppet!” (Read my REVIEW

Several other popular films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Hop, and Carnage.

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

  1. Hi, Terrence and company:

A weird mix of an amalgam of mediocre meanderings for a mundane Monday!

I’m somewhat glad to see Will Farrell’s newest cinematic offering fare so poorly over the weekend. Never thought he was that gifted or comedic to begin with.

‘Teenage Mutant Alien Ninja Turtles’?!!!!…. Seriously?

One of the memorable things about TMNT is its outright, obvious, carefree Cheesiness in adaptation after adaptation.

What’s Michael Bay going to do. Intersperse two minutes of dialogue amongst ten minutes of explosions and then loop it into a film?!

‘Die Hard VII’ in the White House?…. Maybe Gerard Butler can pull it off, but I kind of doubt it.

  2. The Michael Bay TMNT news slays me.

There’s four words, Mike. FOUR %@$#ing words.

If they’re not MUTANTS, what’s next? Suddenly they’re not TEENAGERS? “We wanted to do a movie about what they’d be like as adults…” or they’re not NINJAS anymore? “We thought it would be interesting to make them Cowboys instead…”

I mean, why not just make them Porcupines?

  3. “Leonidas to Save the White House.” Ahah, I do like the sound of that 🙂 Interesting that the news comes on Bruce Willis’ birthday. I do wish GB will come up with a really intriguing project with a good director, I mean he’s kind of on the verge of being irrelevant right now, and this is coming from a big fan like me. Perhaps Leonidas should consult w/ Stelios (Michael Fassbender) as to how to pick some roles, ahah.

Anyway, yeah I’m excited for ‘Huntsman,’ the extended preview is even more exciting.

  4. f%$# Michael Bay, I like how he addressed the fan’s concerns on his website “fans need to take a breath, and chill”

  5. lol I love when producers of shows describe their characters as “edgy”. Its a clear-cut sign that they are trying to hard.

As for the blu-ray releases this week, I’m most excited for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Definitely worthy of adding to the collection.
