Movie News Monday for May 28, 2012

May 28, 2012

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!! What is ‘MNM’all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  This past weekend, Will Smith (Mr. Summer Blockbuster himself) dominated the box office. Taking the #1 spot from the mighty Avengers, Men in Black 3 earned enough to be #1. With only two wide new releases hitting theaters over the weekend, look and see how the films fared.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, May 25 -Sun, May 27:

  1. Men in Black 3 ~$55M
  2. The Avengers ~$37M
  3. Battleship ~$10.8M
  4. The Dictator ~$9.6M
  5. Chernobyl Diaries ~$8M
  6. Dark Shadows ~$7.5M
  7. What to Expect When You’re Expecting ~$7.15M
  8. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ~$6.35M
  9. The Hunger Games ~$2.8M
  10. Think Like a Man ~$1.4M

Congrats to The Men in Black 3! Look for my review here shortly.

#2- “Vin Diesel says ‘I’ll be BAHHCK!'” haha! Okay, so a movie entitled The Machine is in the planning stages. Starring Vin Diesel, director of Get Smart Peter Segal is looking to finalize details to produce this project he wants to see come to life. Check out the Terminator-ish details (courtesy Variety):

“Diesel stars as a human-like machine created in secrecy by the Pentagon as the world’s first true ultimate weapon. Two decades after the government halted the project for unknown reasons, a child finds and befriends ‘The Machine’.”

Planning stages only it seems so far, as Segal has other projects in the wings. Who knows. Perhaps Arnold could have a cameo…nahhh!

Are you interested in this project at all, or have you seen the plot too many times before?

#3- Squirrels to the Nuts casting.” Yes, that is the name of an upcoming movie. Owen Wilson, Olivia Wilde, and Brie Larson have been named as part of this upcoming project.

Squirrels to the Nuts is a story about a “hooker-turned-Broadway-thesp (Larson) and the recurring intersection of those two facets of her life. Wilson will play a Broadway director who pays for the young protag’s services despite being married to the star of the play. He later gives Larson’s character money to quit escorting and follow her dreams. Wilde will play a therapist whose own mother is in rehab for alcoholism.”

Being produced by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach, this project will undoubtedly be full of quirky characters and fun development.

What do you think? Are you nuts about this one?

#4- “Hungry for the Sequel.” The Hunger Games now has an official title for its upcoming sequel in the series. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the official name for the anticipated sequel starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen.

Not much news here, but allow me to add that I like the title. I’m sure it is used for “brand recognition.” (People who do not necessarily follow the story may not recognize “Catching Fire” as being a part of The Hunger Games series, much like The Twilight Saga: Eclipse…New Moon…Breaking Dawn…etc.)

With a November 22, 2013 release date, Lionsgate is looking forward to releasing this Francis Lawrence-directed blockbuster. Currently, no other film is scheduled to release on that weekend, however, Thor 2 is slated for the weekend prior.

I’m sure we can expect for the next 2 films afterwards to be The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay pt 1 and pt 2.

Is the wait too long for the sequel for you?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Coriolanus– The Shakespearean play set in modern times directed by Ralph Fiennes and starring Ralph Fiennes, Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, and more. This one alluded me when it was in theaters and I look forward to checking it out soon.

Here is the trailer:

Several other films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: Gone, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Man on a Ledge.

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

I hope they don’t split Mockingjay into 2. That would be silly. As for Vin Diesel being a machine… good casting but this befriending a child thing sounds more Real Steel than T2.

Man, I’m sorry to tell you Pete, that they confirmed that Mockingjay would be split into 2 films a while back…things may change, but as of right now…that’s the plan.

It is a crazy mad world for sure. I think I will have to purchase a region-less bd player and order some movies from this awesome website’s store I found. It’s called FrontRoomCinema.com! 🙂

I can’t believe MiB3 did so little business over the weekend. Was it because the weather was so nice or was it that no one was asking for a new MiB movie? I’m sure Snow White and the Huntsman will reign supreme next weekend.

SWATH will reign supreme (nice choice of words there), but I think then Prometheus will knock it down the following week. Avengers may not make it to #1 anymore. Possibly not even #2.

I have to admit that the Men in Black 3 trailer looks funny, but I wasn’t gonna go see it on the big screen.

Wahoo for Coriolanus! I might bite the bullet and buy it on BD. It’s been a while since I’m excited for a movie of my #1 crush 🙂

Btw, glad that R-Patz might not be in Catching Fire after all.
