Movie News Monday for June 4, 2012

June 4, 2012

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!! What is ‘MNM’all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  This past weekend, Snow White and the Huntsman teamed up and fought off The Avengers and the Men in Black in order to win over movie goers and claim the #1 spot in the box office. Who knew lil’ Miss White had it in her? And only one other of the four or so new releases made it into the top ten for the weekend. In other news, with $1.355 BILLION Marvel’s The Avengers beat out The Dark Knight in overall gross, placing it as the #3 movie of all time, right behind James Cameron’s Titanic (#2) and Avatar (#1).

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, June 1 -Sun, June 3:

  1. Snow White and the Huntsman ~$56.3M
  2. Men in Black 3 ~$29.3M
  3. The Avengers ~$20.3M
  4. Battleship ~$4.8M
  5. The Dictator ~$4.73M
  6. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ~$4.6M
  7. What to Expect When You’re Expecting ~$4.4M
  8. Dark Shadows ~$3.9M
  9. Chernobyl Diaries ~$3M
  10. For Greater Glory ~1.8M

Congrats to Snow White and the Huntsman!

What did YOU watch this weekend?

#2- “The Dark Knight Rises with more details and footage!'” Last night, during the MTV Movie Awards, footage from The Dark Knight Rises was released. And while all vids of it keep getting pulled from the web due to “Breach of Terms of Use”, let me just tell you that it was pretty awesome! However, while the footage is MIA, new details have emerged about The Dark Knight Rises in theaters!

AMC has listed the film with a running time of 2 hours and 45 minutes. Can’t wait for the epic final conclusion.

Also, in celebration of the epic release, AMC Theaters has announced a “Dark Knight Marathon” to run on June 19. Showing Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and then The Dark Knight Rises back to back. Tickets are set to go on sale starting June 11 at 12pm EST. You can click HERE for tickets.

The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, and more, is set to release on July 20th.

Are you ready for the final chapter?

#3- “Movie Release Date Changes.” Yes, it’s the never ending cycle. A studio announces the release date of that one film you want to see…and then it gets pushed back, then forward, then back again. So many changes. Well, here’s the latest batch of release date changes:

  • World War Z -Due to the need for 7 additional weeks of reshoots, Brad Pitt’s World War Z has been pushed back from December 21, 2012 to June 21, 2013.
  • Robopocalypse – Steven Spielberg’s upcoming adaptation has been movied from the awesome July 4, 2013 weekend to April 25, 2014 with no official reason cited.
  • Thor 2 -Marvel’s sequel moved up from November 15, 2013 to November 8, 2013.
  • The Lone Ranger -Pushed back AGAIN. Was December 2012…then May 31, 2013. NOW: July 3, 2013 (Filling in Robopocalypse‘s spot to compete against Independence Day in 3D).

Pitt’s World War Z

In other news, two sequels have received release dates for 2014.

  • X-Men: First Class sequel slated for July 18, 2014
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes slated for May 23, 2014

Of course…those can change at any time!

What do you think? Do the release date changes make you nervous?

#4- “Warner Bros. seeks Riches with Ritchie” Guy Ritchie (director of Sherlock Holmes) has been attached to an upcoming project by Warner Bros. who now wants a piece of the pirate movie action. After the wildly successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Warner Bros. had decided to produce an updated version of the Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island.

According to Deadline:

“It was said they wanted to update the 19th century tale for contemporary audiences, playing up the relationship between Long John Silver and narrator Jim Hawkins.”

Sounds interesting. Look for more details on this as time goes on.

Are you interested in this project?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

John Carter– This Disney adventure based on the book by Edgar Rice Burroughs finally comes to blu ray! Starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Mark Strong, and more, this one wasn’t well received in theaters, but I LOVED it and will be buying it on blu ray. Will you? Read my REVIEW.

Several other films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: Act of Valor (Read my REVIEW), Machine Gun Preacher, Safe House (Read my REVIEW), and Journey 2.

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

First Class 2 and Dawn of the POTA are two sequels I’m definitely glad to see happening. Interesting to see World War Z getting a summer slot. Longer wait but that’s ok. Got more time to read Robopocalypse now so that’s good!

ha, that’s One way to look at it, Pete! “more time to read.” Hadn’t thought of it that way.

A new Treasure Island could be pretty good. Interesting to see the announcement for the X-Men: First Class sequel, since I don’t think I’ve seen a title for that mentioned yet. I can’t imagine they’re just going to call it X-Men: First Class II… or X-Men: Second Class. 😀

The Robopocalypse delays concerns me, since its original release date really spoke to Spielberg’s confidence in the project. And now that release slot is taken up by The Lone Ranger? So we go from having a film that, from the book’s acclaim, is expected to honor and respect a specific Indian tribe (the Osage, my tribe), to a film that stars a white guy playing a generic Indian in make-up he made up himself. Bit of a kick in the teeth.

A good point about Robopocalypse. I was excited for it to be a summer blockbuster and am sad to see it delayed.

X-Men: Second Class, huh? I dig the title. I was wondering what the title should be. Perhaps that, or Year 2, or something.

I did notice in the press release that Fox was noting that Robocalypse‘s new release date would be worldwide, and would be the equivalent release date of The Avengers. So that part, at least, may not be as negative as first feared — they could be trying for a big early blockbuster.

And with Battleship another FD gamble of mine has goes bust 😦 So far only 2 have really worked out for me(The Hunger Games & the Lorax). Hope my luck changes soon in that regard

And i wasn’t too invested in any of the movies listed. First Class 2 and Thor 2 i have some interest in, but right now i can’t say any of them are heavily anticipated.

well, you will have to pardon me if I don’t mind your FD endeavors not panning out too well. 🙂

Any guesses on what First Class 2 will be entitled? Perhaps, “Year 2” or something like that.

Hey, I’m back at blogging after a month-long hiatus and thought I would stop by and see what you’ve been up to.
This bit of news was rather bad wasn’t it? I mean, the box office is dominated by blockbusters, some of which have received dismal reviews. Then there’s the bit of changing release dates, some of which involve interesting pieces I will have to wait to enjoy. Pushing dates is hardly ever a good sign.
Frankly, I’m pretty tired of sequels, prequels, remakes, whatever you want to call it. I want new ideas! Is it that much to ask?

    Thanks for sharing

Niels! Welcome back. It’s great to see you here.

quite a bit of news, no doubt. and on the subject of sequels, prequels, and remakes…well, you don’t want to get me started. LOL.

New ideas are seemingly quite the rare beast.

I was very disappointed that Fox moved Robopocalypse to 2014. I really enjoyed the book and was excited to finally see Spielberg directing a new big action/sci-fi movie again. Also, like I mentioned on Ruth’s site, I’m very curious about Word War Z; the book was basically a bunch of characters talking about how they survived the zombie war and the film will be a Brad Pitt’s vehicle. Very curious indeed.
