July 16, 2012

Greetings! I’m back. After a long weekend and break from blogging (I worked the entire weekend thru), we start off the week with your fix of movie news. All comments made on the site over the weekend will receive response today. Thank you to all of you faithful readers! Here comes your news…

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!! What is ‘MNM’all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  This past weekend, Ice Age: Continental Drift (my movie review soon to come) floated to the top of the box office. The fourth in the icy series attracted children and parents of children as the final animated adventure of the summer. The Amazing Spider-Man took second place after 12 days in the box office. Ice Age: Continental Drift won though, being the only wide new release over the weekend.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, July 13 -Sun, July 15:

  1. Ice Age: Continental Drift ~$46M
  2. The Amazing Spider-Man ~$35M
  3. Ted ~$22.1M
  4. Brave ~$10.7M
  5. Magic Mike ~$9M
  6. Savages ~$8.7M
  7. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection ~$5.6M
  8. Katy Perry: Part of Me ~$3.7M
  9. Moonrise Kingdom ~$3.66M
  10. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted ~$3.5M

Congrats to Ice Age: Continental Drift!

What did YOU watch this weekend?

#2-After Earth Viral Video!” You may recall that director M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film After Earth stars father-son duo Will and Jaden Smith. According to the film’s official Facebook page, here is a short summary of the film:

A father and son, after a crash landing, explore a planet that was evacuated by humans due to catastrophic events.

A bit vague. But, here is a little bit more from ComingSoon.Net:

Starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith, After Earth takes place one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth. Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

Well, this week, Shyamalan and company released a viral video that gives a fictional timeline and historical account of events leading up to what will be presented in this upcoming thriller. Check it out.

Viral campaigns have proven to be very effective marketing tools for films (Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man, just to name a few). I expect to see quite a bit more as M. Night works to gain back the fans he has lost over time. Be on the lookout. After Earth hits theaters tentatively on June 7, 2013.

What are your thoughts? Are you ready to give Shyamalan another chance…with Will and Jaden Smith?

#3- “IRON MAN meets the young IRON MEN and WOMEN” Of course, Comic-Con has just ended. With tons of surprises, movie panels, exclusively released footage, and stars and costumes galore, this past week just proves how much I should have been there! haha. Did you go? If you did, chances are that you caught a glimpse or two Robert Downey, Jr there promoting Marvel’s Iron Man 3.

Well, as part of the promotion, there was a Iron Man child costume contest. And, Mr. Tony Stark himself showed up to be a surprise judge! (I know this isn’t “ground-breaking movie news, but I wanted to share it!)

Check out the video showing him surprising all of the kids with the amazing Iron Man costumes. It’s great to see stars that love to interact with their fans. Bravo to you Mr. Robert Downey, Jr.

Iron Man 3 is set to release in theaters on May 3, 2013.

For more amazing footage of the events at Comic-Con, be sure to visit Dan’s page at Fogs’MovieReviews as he was there himself and shared tons of footage, pictures, descriptions, costumes, and videos of the fantastic things he saw and the stars he met while there! Don’t miss all the coverage! Thanks, Dan for sharing!

You ready for Iron Man again?

#4- “Vacation time is at the Helm!” Ah, the Griswold family vacations! Christmas time! Europe! Vegas! haha. Well, vacation time may once again hit the big screen in form of a reboot/sequel of sorts. Ed Helms (The Hangover, The Office, Cedar Rapids) is currently in negotiations to play Rusty Griswold (the son of Chevy Chase’s Clark Griswold in the series). Reports state that he will be all grown up and venturing on vacations of his own with his family!

This seems like a pretty sure thing as plans to begin production revolve around Helms’ schedule and wrapping up The Office and The Hangover 3. With both John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein directing, Vacation hopes to bring back some of the magic and fun from the original series that was based on some of the actual events from screenwriter John Hughes’ actual family vacations! I just wonder if Chevy Chase will be a part of the project as the now older Clark Griswold. Helms is a great choice to continue/restart (?) the franchise.

Are you ready for more of the Griswolds?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Casa de mi Padre– ha. I wanted to see this comedy, but never got the chance to in theaters. Will Ferrell speaking Spanish, fighting drug barons, and shooting guns…oh boy! What a recipe for funny. This film finally reaches the shelves of your local video store this week. I expect it to be full of laughs and quite enjoyable. Anchorman fans are sure to enjoy it quite a bit. (Read Dan’s review of the film here: REVIEW)

Several other films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: Lockout (Read my REVIEW), Friends with Kids, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and The Three Stooges.

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

The main reason i’m interested in After Earth is because of Isabellle Fuhrman. I’m hoping she has a prominent role in it

Who’s to say? Glad to see her get some more work. I rather liked her performance in Orphan.

Her not being mentioned in the summary is not a good sign, but i’m still holding out hope. And i wish Orphan got more attention. I truly think that was one of the best child performances i’ve seen

She did very well in Orphan. I suspect that won’t change here. While Shyamalan may not always have the best scripts, he usually picks great acting talent.

Interesting about the Vacation Reboot. I think Ed Helms would make a fine choice as well. Looking forward to it actually proceeding.

you and I both Max. Helms is an excellent choice and I would love to see another Vacation film that (1) doesn’t have Ryan Reynolds, and (2) doesn’t go straight to dvd.

I think Ed Helms will probably be decent in the Vacation sequel, but if Chevy Chase isn’t involved, I don’t think I’m interested. Nobody watched the Vacation films to see “the Griswolds”. They watched to see Clark Griswold.

Helms is a great choice, but, I agree, Clark had better be involved.
