Movie News Monday for August 20, 2012

After returning from my week out-of-town, here comes your first post of the week! It’s Monday…and that means that it is time for “Movie News Monday!”

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!! What is ‘MNM’all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  This past weekend, Bourne Legacy had to fight against several other big name action stars in The Expendables 2 for the#1 in the box office arena. But unfortunately, Jeremy Renner just was no match for Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Statham, Willis, Norris, and the rest of the crew. With 4 wide new releases, moviegoers had plenty to choose from.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Aug 17 -Sun, Aug 19:

  1. The Expendables 2 ~$27.8M
  2. Bourne Legacy ~$17M
  3. ParaNorman ~$14M
  4. The Campaign ~$13.4M
  5. Sparkle ~$12M
  6. The Dark Knight Rises ~$11.1M
  7. The Odd Life of Timothy Green ~$10.9M
  8. Hope Springs ~$9.1M
  9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days ~$3.9M
  10. Total Recall (2012) ~$3.5M

Congrats to The Expendables 2! (Be on the lookout for my review later this evening!)

What did YOU watch this weekend?

#2-BREAKING NEWS: Director Tony Scott Dies in apparent suicide.” It is unfortunate and sad news to have to report today that last night, 68-year-old director Tony Scott (brother of director Ridley Scott), died in an apparent suicide. The director of films such as Top Gun, Man on Fire, and Enemy of the State jumped off of the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles “without hesitation.” Here is the report from Daily Breeze:

British film director Tony Scott, known for such Hollywood blockbusters as “Top Gun,” “Days of Thunder,” “Beverly Hills Cop II” and “The Taking of Pelham 123,” jumped to his death Sunday from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s officials. Scott, 68, climbed a fence on the south side of the bridge’s apex and leapt off “without hesitation” around 12:30 p.m., according to the Coroner’s Department and port police. A suicide note was found inside Scott’s black Toyota Prius, which was parked on one of the eastbound lanes of the bridge, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Jennifer Osburn. (You can read a fuller detailed report HERE.)

Undoubtedly, the Scott family values their privacy in this time especially. My condolences to his wife, twin sons, his brother, and all those affected by his death.

#3- “La Femme Expendable.” Well, first there was The Expendables, and this past weekend The Expendables 2 released with more action stars, explosions, silly one-liners and references, and fun. And since the guys are having all of the fun, it looks as if the girls will have their day as well. An all-female version of the blockbuster is currently in the works with screenwriter Dutch Southern attached to the project.

ha! I’m not kidding. This is no April Fool’s joke. I’m down to see some of the baddest female action stars go head to head in an action film! Why not?!

Currently, there have been NO announcements made as to who will be chosen to be in the film, but here are a few that I’d like to toss in for consideration:

Kate Beckinsale (Underworld), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill), Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels), Carrie Anne-Moss (The Matrix), Sigourney Weaver (Alien), Linda Hamilton (Terminator), Gina Carano (Haywire), Michelle Yeoh (Tomorrow Never Dies), Angelina Jolie (Wanted), Milla Jovavich (Resident Evil), Michelle Rodriguez (Machete), Zoe Saldana (Colombiana), and Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers).

Ha! You know you would watch my cast in a movie like The Expendables!

Chime in! Who would you like to see in such a movie?

#4- “Indy in IMAX.” This past week, while I was out-of-town, I got to see The Dark Knight Rises on IMAX!…and it was GREAT! If you haven’t seen it on IMAX and you have it available to you, “Git on it!” …and get ready for a nice delight. Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark will be in IMAX for 1 week starting September 7, 2012.

Indy fans, this IS a MUST! Check out the report courtesy ComingSoon.Net:

The cinematic classic that introduced the world to Indiana Jones is ready to embark on a new adventure when director Steven Spielberg and executive producer George Lucas unforgettable Raiders of the Lost Ark is released for an exclusive one-week engagement in select IMAX theatres beginning September 7, 2012.  The film has undergone a complete restoration for the IMAX exclusive one-week release and subsequent debut on Blu-ray. Tickets and a list of participating theatres are available starting today at

When I saw the stunning quality of the picture and heard the enhanced sound in an IMAX theatre, I was quite literally blown away and hope that audiences will enjoy the experience as much as I did, said Spielberg.

We are honored to present all the excitement of Indiana Jones in a way it’s never been experienced before  IMAX, said Greg Foster, Chairman & President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment.  We look forward to celebrating this iconic film with longtime fans as well as a new generation of moviegoers.

The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Under the supervision of Spielberg and renowned sound designer Ben Burtt, Raiders of the Lost Ark has been meticulously restored with careful attention to preserving the original look, sound and feel of the iconic film for its highly-anticipated release on Blu-ray as part of INDIANA JONES: The Complete Adventures.  Every extraordinary exploit of world-renowned, globetrotting hero Indiana Jones finally comes home in sparkling high-definition on September 18, 2012 from Lucasfilm Ltd. and Paramount Home Media Distribution.  In addition to all of the thrilling adventures, the set features seven hours of fascinating bonus material, including a brand new two-part documentary entitled On Set with Raiders of the Lost Ark  From Jungle to Desert and From Adventure to Legend.  Featuring nearly an hour of rarely seen footage from the set of the film and archival interviews with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford, this captivating piece transports fans back to where the legend began.

Are you going? You better! 😀

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

A Separation– This Oscar-winning Iranian film tells the touching story of a couple who faces a decision of leaving their country to provide a better childhood for their son, or stay in their country and care for an ailing parent with Alzheimer’s. I didn’t get the opportunity to view this one, but it is currently in the Top 250 of IMDB’s list, received an Oscar nomination for Best Writing/Original Screenplay, and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year. You may want to check it out.

Several other films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: Bernie, The Dictator (read my review: HERE), and the final season of House, M.D.

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

up next: Review for The Expendables 2 followed by “Time to Vote Tuesday!”

  1. I would watch the crap out of a female version of the Expendables. Mostly just to watch Linda Hamilton run around armed to the teeth and hopefully hear Sigourney Weaver yell “Get away from her you bitch!” one more time.

  2. The Tony Scott news is very sad. There are so many films he’s directed which I have LOVED and even more where he’s been a producer.

The only reason The Expendables is kinda awesome is because these guys are LEGENDS in the action hero genre. No offence to any ladies, but I can’t really think of proper female legends of the action hero genre. Please no.

    • I agree with Jaina; we’re only just now getting to where we have significant female action stars. There aren’t any female legends in the genre yet. Even Linda Hamilton, who comes closest, only really had one film where she was the action lead and not the damsel in distress.

      • It is true. Jaina did bring up a good point. But maybe this can make some of them legends. hahaha. Just so long as Kristen Stewart isn’t brought in.

It would be funny if they have to get together to rescue Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie or someone like that. hahahaha

    • I was shocked to hear of Tony Scott’s death. Enjoyed a lot of his movies (not necessarily his shaky camera angles though).

it’s true that the legend status of the actresses is not there for the ladies, but, it’s still kinda fun to look forward to…like, the WNBA! mwahahaha

  3. Hi, Terrence and company:

The high point of today’s post is the all female ‘Expendables’. Though Pam Grier should be included. As well as Helen Mirren as Diana Rigg’s (Mrs. Emma Peel from the 1960s UK’s ‘The Avengers’) Executive Officer.

Last time I checked, Ms. Peel is free. And slated to play a guest role in the upcoming season of HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’.

  4. I also saw Batman in IMAX and it was pretty sweet. Don’t know if Indy will be playing anywhere close to me or not, but the restoration spells good things for the upcoming Bluray release.

  5. That Tony Scott news is just so tragic… what drove people to such extremes?? Oh my, I feel for their families and his young boys who are left behind.

That photo of the female Expendables is a hoot! I’d probably watch it if Michelle Yeoh is in it 🙂

  6. However tragic Tony Scott’s death is, I really hope this means that Top Gun sequel is dead. That entire idea was bad. It’s bad like making a sequel to The Last Boy Scout.
