Movie News Monday for September 17, 2012

September 17, 2012

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!!

What is ‘MNM’all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  This past weekend the #1 spot in the box office arena finally went to one of the 2 wide new releases. With Finding Nemo 3D and Resident Evil: Retribution finding their way into theaters, audiences had plenty to go and see. Only Finding Nemo 3D couldn’t quite swim its way to the very top. This past weekend also saw The Dark Knight Rises finally find its way out of the Top Ten after 8 weeks of being there.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Sept 14 -Sun, Sept 16:

  1. Resident Evil: Retribution ~$21.1M
  2. Finding Nemo 3D ~$17.5M
  3. The Possession ~$5.8M
  4. Lawless ~$4.2M
  5. ParaNorman ~3M
  6. The Expendables 2 ~$3M
  7. The Words ~$2.9M
  8. Bourne Legacy ~$2.9M
  9. The Odd Life of Timothy Green ~$2.5M
  10. The Campaign ~$2.4M

Congrats to Resident Evil: Retribution

What did YOU watch this weekend?

#2- “Staying in the LOOP.” Looper, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, and Emily Blunt releases in theaters on September 28.

Director Rian Johnson (who also wrote and directed 2005’s Brick) shares a little bit more of what to expect from this amazing looking action movie in this recent featurette.

In a recent interview about Premium Rush, Gordon-Levitt actually admitted to being most excited for Looper when referring to his post-Dark Knight Rises movies of 2012 (Premium Rush, Looper, Lincoln). Also starring Jeff Daniels, Paul Dano, Piper Perabo and more, I cannot wait to see this film either. How about you?

Be on the lookout, because in 11 days…Looper…is…coming!

Are you ready to see Looper? Who will win ultimately —Levitt or Willis?

#3- “Rubber RoboCop.” haha, so, the new set photos for the upcoming RoboCop reboot had the web all up in a stir this past weekend as interested people saw title star Joel Kinnaman’s outfit that resembled a mix of Batman, Iron Man, and other more recent superhero suits! The black color surprised a few people expecting the same silver look as the original. The update came as a bit of a shock but the black is confirmed to be the color of choice. Of course, rubber is NOT the material it is made of, but I suppose he could be the new mascot for Goodyear or Michelin tires! 😀

If you haven’t seen the suit yet, here you go:

Of course, many people are hoping for extra CGI to change the look of the suit, but a new banner/sales poster shows that there may not be as many changes as hoped for.

Get ready. RoboCop is back and in black! It is currently filming in Toronto and has an announced tentative release date of August 9, 2013.

What do you think of the bold black suit? Are you still looking for his cape, cowl, and chest symbol?

#4- “Mackie to take Flight.” No surprise: Captain America: The Winter Soldier has already been announced. Some characters expected to be featured along with Cap himself are Sharon Carter (Agent Peggy Carter’s niece), Bucky Barnes, the Red Skull, and…the Falcon.

Who is the Falcon (A.K.A. Sam Wilson)? Here is a little bit of the character’s bio taken from his complete bio at Marvel.com:

Sam grew up in a tough Harlem neighborhood. His father, a minister, had been killed trying to stop a fight. Sam did his best to try and do the right thing, but when his mother was killed by a mugger two years later, Sam’s grief and anger consumed him. His grief and anger consumed his personality, eventually led him down a criminal path. The once-respected community volunteer took on the name of “Snap” Wilson, becoming a racketeer while working for the mob.

After an assignment in Rio de Janeiro, Sam’s plane crashed in a remote Caribbean island where the Red Skull and his henchmen, the Exiles, were hiding out. The Red Skull sought to use Wilson as a pawn against Captain America, who was currently on the island searching for the villain. The Skull reasoned that Wilson’s idealism would appeal to the Captain enough to become his crimefighting partner. Then, at some later date, the Skull could use Wilson against his enemy. He used a Cosmic Cube to revert “Snap” into Sam and give Sam the ability to telepathically communicate with birds, especially a bird that Wilson had bought named Redwing. Sam helped Captain America defeat the Skull and did indeed become his partner as the Falcon.

More on Marvel.com

Who is playing the Falcon? Anthony Mackie.

When asked by Newsday about playing the character, here is what Mackie had to say:

I’m playing the Falcon. He’s this guy in Harlem who moved to California and became a drug dealer. His plane crashed, and he was genetically altered, and he can fly, has telepathic powers. He’s the first African-American superhero. It makes me feel all the work I’ve done has been paying off. I have a son, nephews and nieces, and I love the idea that they can dress up as the Falcon on Halloween. They now have someone they can idolize. That’s a huge honor for me.

There currently still is no official word as to how they will use the character’s storyline or what they will use in the film. There are so many things they could do. It will be interesting to see. I am growing even more interested in seeing how all of these characters are woven together into the story that Marvel has for us. Get ready. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2014.

What do you think of this casting news?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Cabin in the Woods– Joss Whedon’s horror satire was so much fun to watch! Starring Chris Hemsworth (before he became a household name synonymous with the god of thunder), Kristen Connolly, Amy Acker and more, Cabin in the Woods finally makes its way to Blu-ray. Be sure to read my review HERE and check for it in your local Best Buy (or other movie retailer) this week!

Announcing another BIG Blu-ray release you MUST OWN:

Indiana Jones Complete Adventures. For the first time on Blu-ray, the Indiana Jones movies are available in full HD glory! A true treasure in and of itself worth seeking out! Buy it! Buy it NOW! 😀

Several other films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Katy Perry: Part of Me, The Magic of Belle Isle, Hysteria, Detachment, The Woman in the Fifth and The Art of Rap.

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

That RoboCop is crap! Did an article on it 😦
Also how much do you think Dredd will make in the US this weekend? made $1.7M on UK weekend 😀

Soooo…what you’re saying is…you really like the armor suit? Sweet! I knew you would. 😀

Asking me to forecast Dredd huh? hmmm, well, I think that people are still quite skeptical but will be interested enough to see it. Along with the added cost of 3D viewings and its current 90% RT score from critics, I’ll say it will make $23.5 Million over the weekend. Good for #1 spot. Just a wild guess.

Seems like an educated guess to me, will it make over $50M in US? because that’s what it needs for a sequel 😀

I’d love to own that new Indiana Jones Box-set. I think I’ll be waiting for the Holidays since money is a little tight right now, but it has been getting some amazing reviews for video. I can personally speak for Raiders of the Lost Ark because I saw that in IMAX.

That’s cool about Anthony Mackins, and I can’t wait for Looper! I love watching films that writers/directors helm.

Nice catch finding that in the Anthony Mackie interview… I’d heard rumors, but I don’t think I’d seen confirmation before now. That’s cool, he’s a good actor, and I hope that this works out well for both him and the character.

Is there anyone out there in internet-land who likes the new RoboCop look? 😀 I haven’t heard from any yet. Just an awful, awful design.

The Indiana Jones boxed set has me wishing I had a Blu-Ray drive on my computer… or a Blu-Ray player….

I wonder if this will lead to a re-suiting of RoboCop, much like what happened for Wonder Woman in the TV series that never got too far. I can’t wait, however to see what Mackie does in the role of the Falcon.

Thanks for reading and chiming in on today’s news.

Yeah, I don’t know… I suspect they’re already too far gone in this direction to go changing things much for RoboCop. But I don’t know.

    Indy!!
Also, is that guy playing Falcon the guy from Adjustment Bureau? And… Falcon? Really? Where’s Black Panther, or even Captain Marvel?

Yes sir, Mackie was also in The Adjustment Bureau, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and Hurt Locker.

Not certain if/when Black Panther will get into the movie scene yet.

Love Henry Cavill for a decade now. Don’t know why his COLD LIGHT OF THE DAY wasn’t at all successful at the box office? 😦

it didn’t get very much advertisement to begin with and Bruce Willis’s involvement may have confused people with Looper also releasing so close. who knows? I have great hopes for Cavill’s future however.
