Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!!
What is ‘MNM’ all about?
In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!
This Just In!!…
#1- “The Weekend Winner.” For almost an entire month now, none of the new releases managed to claim the #1 spot in the box office during the weekend. 3 weeks in a row gave Twilight Breaking Dawn pt 2 the winning spot. This last weekend still did not go to a new release, but it DID go to James Bond. That’s right. Bond beat the Vampires and came in at #1 in its 5th week! Congrats to Skyfall. Mark another bad week for the new releases category. And Killing Them Softly decreased by 60% from the previous weekend and barely made it in the Top Ten during the past dismal box office weekend.
Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Dec 7 -Sun, Dec 9:
- Skyfall ~$11M
- Rise of the Guardians ~$10.5M
- The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, pt 2 ~$9.2M
- Lincoln ~$9.1M
- Life of Pi ~$8.3M
- Playing for Keeps ~$6M
- Wreck-It Ralph ~$4.9M
- Red Dawn ~$4.3M
- Killing Them Softly ~$2.7M
*Actuals may vary as earnings are updated much later on Monday afternoons. For updates, visit boxofficemojo.com.
Congrats (once again…) to Skyfall.
What did YOU watch this weekend?
#2- “New Addition to make 2015 a ‘Fantastic’ Year for Superheroes.” 2015 seems to be the year for superhero movies as not only will that year bring the sequel to 2012’s The Avengers to theaters, along with Ant-Man and DC’s Justice League movie, but it will also bring a Fantastic Four reboot to audiences around the world.
That’s correct. The Fantastic Four will receive the reboot treatment and has received a release date of March 6, 2015 with director Josh Trank (Chronicle) leading the way. Currently the screenplay is in the works and there are little to no details about what to expect from the story so far. I just hope it ends up being far better than the last two FF movies.
In addition to the Marvel and DC offerings in 2015, fans also have other films to look forward to such as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and Star Wars: Episode VII.
Are you ready a fan of the superhero genre trend?
#3- “1st Trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s AFTER EARTH“ Another M. Night movie? Yes. And he’s partnered up with Will and Jaden Smith.
Check out the synopsis for Shyamalan’s After Earth and then watch the FIRST trailer that just launched this morning. I have it here for you now:
A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.
Wow! I remain hopeful, yet skeptical. Simply because of the name “Shyamalan.” But, hopefully the “Super Smiths” will make it great!
After Earth is scheduled to release on June 7, 2013.
What are your initial thoughts after seeing the trailer? Is Shyamalan back?
#4- “Part Two Coming to a Theater Near You.” Let’s face it. Sequels are here to stay. Especially in certain genres (horror, superhero, etc). Most times, sequel announcements just cause us to roll our eyes and sigh. Here’s a look at a few upcoming movie sequels that may have you smiling instead of sighing:
- Wreck-It Ralph 2 (may also include an appearance by MARIO)
- Alice In Wonderland 2
- Ted 2
- Bourne Legacy (2?)
- Magic Mike 2
- Alex Cross 2 (Double Cross)
- Ghostbusters 3 (Dan Akyroyd is determined regardless of Bill Murray’s non-involvement)
- Mission Impossible 5
- Taken 3
- Tron 3
- Triplets (essentially “Twins” 2)
- Casablanca 2 (in considerations)
I said that some of those “MAY” have you smiling.
Admittedly, I sighed at a few on that list. Not all are completely confirmed, but that’s just a quick look at some projects to keep a lookout for.
Are you interested in any of these sequels?
#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This TUESDAY, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:
The Bourne Legacy– Jeremy Renner takes the lead in the simultaneous continuation of the Bourne franchise. Agent Aaron Cross is on the run from government operatives as he uncovers more about his mysterious clandestine past. Partnered up with Rachel Weisz, Renner brings this action-y installment of the Bourne franchise to new heights…or lows, depending on your opinion of the film. Check out mine in my REVIEW.
Several other films also release this week. Check it out!
Also releasing: Ted, Ice Age: Continental Drift (Read my REVIEW), and Babes in Toyland and more.
Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”
Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!
