Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!!
What is ‘MNM’ all about?
In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!
This Just In!!…
#1- “The Weekend Winner.” For the LAST WEEKEND of 2012 the box office went to none other than…The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for the 3rd weekend in a row! It barely edged out over several new releases throughout the weekend. Such an exciting year in movies from the box office. We saw The Avengers claim the #1 all-time box office earning spot, along with several others that tanked (unfortunately for John Carter…which I enjoyed). Congratulations to Skyfall which just hit $1 BILLION worldwide over the weekend. WOW!
Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Dec 28 -Sun, Dec 30:
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ~$32.9M
- Django Unchained ~$30.7M
- Les Misérables ~$28M
- Parental Guidance ~$14.8M
- Jack Reacher ~$14M
- This is 40 ~$13.2M
- Lincoln ~$7.5
- The Guilt Trip ~$6.7M
- Monster’s Inc 3D ~$6.4M
- Rise of the Guardians ~$4.9M
Interesting tidbit: This past weekend, Lincoln showed in almost 300 theaters less than the previous weekend, but earned over $2M more than the previous weekend ($7.2M vs. $5.5M)!
*Actuals may vary as earnings are updated much later on Monday afternoons. For updates, visit boxofficemojo.com.
Congrats to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
What did YOU watch this weekend?
#2- “Pacific Rim new still.” Director Guillermo del Toro has been busy. Gears are in motion as the release for Pacific Rim draws near. I am pretty excited to see this one that looks to mix a little bit of Power Rangers, Voltron, Godzilla, Big O, Evangelion and Transformers together. It’s got my attention.
Did you see the first full trailer yet? (Check it out HERE, it’s the 4th trailer!)
Although we have to wait until July 12th to see Pacific Rim, check out the latest new still featuring Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi.
Okay, so that photo doesn’t give us much at this point in time. You can check out more production still here. Here is a summary for the film from ComingSoon.net:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Are you ready for Robots-not-so-in-disguise?
#3- “Assembling The Avengers.“ Check out this pretty sweet featurette that gives a behind the scenes look at what it took to assemble The Avengers in one of my favorite shots of the Marvel movie. It is amazing the work they are able to do in movies nowadays that really makes the experience spectacular. Industrial Light & Magic did some amazing work on The Avengers. Watch as they explain how they brought the team together…literally!
The timing for The Avengers to come to the big screen couldn’t have been better. This would never have been accomplished 10, 15, 20 years ago. Such great work, and it’s nice to see some of the behind the scenes work, don’t you think?
Get ready for The Avengers 2 that is slated for release in theaters May 10, 2015.
What other movies with amazing CGI and digital effects did you enjoy this year?
#4- “The Fast and Furious Diesel.” Vin Diesel is on a roll right now. In 2013 we will see him reprise two different franchise roles as both Fast and Furious 6 and Riddick release in the very near future. Congratulations to him and his success. With that comes the attention of more would-be moneymaking studios, producers and directors.
Last week, Diesel announced on his Facebook Page that a childhood passion project of his looks to have a greenlight from a mysterious/still unnamed studio. His passion project Hannibal The Conqueror will star Diesel as the title character in his own directorial debut. Here’s what Diesel had to say:
“When a dream is born in your childhood,” Diesel writes,“When you spend a decade daring to pursue it… The day, a head of a studio says… ‘I want to make all three films of your Hannibal trilogy!’ Haha… It takes a minute to sink in… Shhhhh… it’s still sinking in.”
Details are very slim about this project centered around the Carthaginian military commander Hannibal Barca. Expect more as time goes on. But, in the meantime, get ready for Diesel to roll out into theaters with Cars and Chronicles this year!
What are your thoughts on Diesel’s passion project?
#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:
Looper (Released TODAY)– Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt share the same name in this time-travel thriller from the inventive mind of director Rian Johnson (Brick). Co-starring Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels, Paul Dano and more, this unique tale is worth a watch and definitely was one that I enjoyed in 2012. Check out my full thoughts in my review HERE.
Several other films also release this week. Check it out!
Also releasing: Cosmopolis, Zodiac (Director’s cut) and more.
Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”
Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!
