Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  For the inaugural weekend of 2013 the box office contenders fell victim to the crime of a hack and slash horror taking first place. haha. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D claimed the #1 spot in the first weekend of the traditionally disappointing first 8-9 weeks of the year. Being the only wide new release throughout the weekend, it contended with the likes of Django Unchained which passed $100 million overall total gross in the box office since its Christmas day release.  We will see which movie takes the #1 spot next week as the throne revolves with each new release from Jan-Mar.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Jan 4 -Sun, Jan 6:

  1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D ~$23M
  2. Django Unchained ~$20M
  3. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ~$17.5M
  4. Les Misérables ~$16M
  5. Parental Guidance ~$10M
  6. Jack Reacher ~$9.3M
  7. This is 40 ~$8.6M
  8. Lincoln ~$5.3M
  9. The Guilt Trip ~$4.5M
  10. Promised Land ~$4.3M

#2- “A Peek Into the Darkness.” Star Trek Into Darkness is only about five months away and fans can’t wait to see it. Check out some of the newest images from the set of one of the most anticipated films of 2013. (Click one for a full-screen slideshow and navigate with the arrow keys.)

Here is the official synopsis:

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Star Trek Into Darkness is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch and more, and releases in theaters on May 27, 2013.

What do you think of the images? Ready for May?

#3- “Helen Mirren IS and HAS a star!” Dame Helen Mirren received the honor of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame…and became the first of 2013 to receive the honor. She is the 2,488th recipient of the traditional award that has been apart of Hollywood since 1958.

When asked about her award, Mirren stated: “Well I’m very pleased and proud and I think it’s very good for the British monarchy that here on Hollywood Boulevard, the King and the Queen are going to actually sleep together, for the rest of history,” Mirren, of course, won an Oscar for playing as The Queen in the 2006 biopic…Her star is placed right next to Colin Firth who also received an Oscar for his performance as the King in 2010’s The King’s Speech.

Helen Mirren Honored On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Congratulations to Helen Mirren! See Mirren in Hitchcock (currently playing in select theaters) and next in RED 2 which releases on August 2, 2013.

What is your favorite role of Helen Mirren’s?

#4- “Upcoming Sneak Peek at Pixar’s next short.” Pixar’s next film, Monster’s University, is a film that I am looking forward to. June 21st the classes will begin at the university and I will be in my seat! Something that Pixar is well-known for is their wonderful storytelling through digitally animated shorts that precede their feature presentations.pixar

Their next one, that will show prior to Monster’s University, is entitled “The Blue Umbrella” and a short preview clip of it has been released. Check it out.

The animation at Pixar never ceases to impress! Look at the umbrella and the water, the lighting, the reflection! Wow. Can’t wait to see this cute

What is your favorite Pixar short?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Dredd– This one surprised me this past year. I liked it quite a bit. Great cast with Karl Urban in the titular role. Fantastic soundtrack. Plenty of action. Check out this reboot that more than made up for Stallone’s helmet-less portrayal of the gun-wielding comic book bastion of justice. My full thoughts in my review HERE.drdd1110

Several other films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: Frankenweenie (Read my REVIEW), Samsara, House at the End of the Street, Hit & Run (Read my REVIEW), Seal Team Six, Mrs. Miniver and more.

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!
