Movie News Monday for January 14, 2013.

January 14, 2013

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)!!

What is ‘MNM’ all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  The second weekend of January brought a few films to fight it out for the #1 box office spot. Gangsters fought against Navy SEALs while ghosts tried to spook all of them out of the way. However, it was the expanded release of Zero Dark Thirty to beat out the other 2 wide new releases throughout the weekend. Also, glad to see Silver Linings Playbook come back into the Top Ten with a showing in only 810 theaters nationwide!

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Jan 11 -Sun, Jan 13:

  1. Zero Dark Thirty ~$24M
  2. A Haunted House ~$18.8M
  3. Gangster Squad ~$16.7M
  4. Django Unchained ~$11M
  5. Les Miserables ~$10M
  6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ~$9.1M
  7. Lincoln ~$6.3M
  8. Parental Guidance ~$6.1M
  9. Texas Chainsaw 3D ~$5.2M
  10. Silver Linings Playbook ~$5M

*Actuals may vary as earnings are updated much later on Monday afternoons. For updates, visit boxofficemojo.com.

Congrats to Zero Dark Thirty (my REVIEW).banner_zero dark thirty

What did YOU watch this weekend?

#2- “And the Golden Globes went to…” In case you missed it, last night was the 70th annual Golden Globe ceremony and the stars came out in style! With a great duo hostess team in Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, this year’s ceremony was full of fun, laughs, tears, smiles…and even a couple of Presidents! I very much enjoyed watching this year’s Golden Globes. (Click any picture for a full-screen slideshow. Use arrow keys to scroll)

Rather than list all the winners out here, I have two ways for you to enjoy.

1st: A video report from ClevverMovies sharing a few of the movie results in a quick recap.

2nd: Visit ImpassionedCinema.Com HERE for a full comprehensive report on all the winners in each category.

Congratulations to the winners. And I was so glad for Ben Affleck, especially seeing the non-existent nomination he received from the Academy for an Oscar.

And, perhaps E.T. (I mean Daniel Day-Lewis) will hopefully win one more award for best actor when the Oscars come around on February 24!

What was your best moment of the Golden Globes?

#3- “The Next Step: Dance and Dinosaurs Ah, Sequels. The bread&butter of Hollywood it seems lately. Some we demand, some we don’t mind, some we despise. The continuation is often expected nowadays when a movie tends to rake in the bucks! In a recent interview, even J.J. Abrams (director of May’s Star Trek Into Darkness) teased about a sequel to this year’s sequel (oh, the geekboy in my is super excited and full of glee at the possibility that Abrams is already planning on it).movie-nerd-star-trek-2-into-darkness

This week, news for two more sequels hit the presses. One is about dance and the other, dinosaurs:

Step Up 5 has received a screenwriter in John Swetnam and is expected to see several of the franchise’s previous stars two-step their way into the film! Fan favorites such as tWitch, Moose and more are expected though not confirmed at this moment. While fans may hope to see Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum also return for a cameo, reports say not to get too excited as Tatum has moved his career on past the franchise and he and his dancing wife is now expecting their first child.

Jurassic Park 4: We’ve waited and waited and been teased and teased. JP4 has been announced to have a 2014 release date with Steven Spielberg himself set to produce. The June 13, 2014 3D release still has yet to find its director, but the thought of Jurassic Park being re-opened for business is pretty exciting.

What are you excited for more? Dances or Dinosaurs?

#4- “Fast & Furious 6 image.” Check out this new image for the 6th installment of the Fast & Furious franchise that shows a moment between Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez’s characters. Knowing the storyline of the previous films, especially the after credit scenes of the last one, I definitely can’t wait to see what the scene is like. What do you think they are saying to each other?fast-furious-6-michelle-rodriguez-vin-diesel-600x399

Fast & Furious 6 releases in theaters on May 24th and Vin Diesel spilled the beans that a trailer for it will debut during this year’s Superbowl.

Are you a fan of Fast & Furious?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Taken 2– One of the more disappointing films of 2012 that will have its story continued in Taken 3. Liam Neeson stars as Bryan Mills once again and he and his family end up on a vacation of sorts that ends up full of fighting and fear as opposed to fun. Mills does what he does best, only, it’s not his best showing of it. Check out my full review HERE. Take Taken 2 home if you must.taken2bluray1

Several other films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: To Rome With Love, The Possession, Won’t Back Down and more.

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were great at the Golden Globes. Best hosting job I’ve seen for a long time.
