This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  Last weekend, 3 wide new releases entered the box office arena to compete for the #1 spot. And for the most part, it was a colossal calamity. With giants, 21 year olds and last exorcisms…again…this past weekend was rather ho-hum and filled with fee, fi, fo, fums. Fun to see films like Silver Linings Playbook still beating newer releases while in its 16th week in theaters though.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Mar. 1 -Sun, Mar. 3:

  1. Jack the Giant Slayer ~$28M
  2. Identity Thief ~$9.7M
  3. 21 and Over ~$9M
  4. The Last Exorcism part II ~$8M
  5. Snitch ~$7.7M
  6. Escape from Planet Earth ~$6.7M
  7. Safe Haven ~$6.3M
  8. Silver Linings Playbook ~$5.9M
  9. A Good Day to Die Hard ~$4.5M
  10. Dark Skies ~$3.6M

*Actuals may vary as earnings are updated much later on Monday afternoons. For updates, visit boxofficemojo.com.

Congratulations to Jack the Giant Slayer (read my review).jackgiantslayer

What did YOU watch this weekend?

***Did you catch President Obama’s major sci-fi faux pas in which he mixed up Star Trek and Star Wars? It was an honest mistake, but it was also pretty funny as he was trying to be “hip”! Click the photo to check it out! 🙂jedi

#2- “Emma Watson is a Princess” The impressive Emma Watson made her initial stamp on Hollywood as Hermoine in the Harry Potter films. And since then, much like Daniel Radcliffe (and much better might I add), she has proven that she is much more than just her HP character. Taking on roles in My Week with Marilyn, Perks of Being a Wallflower, the upcoming Aronofsky film Noah and more, Watson is definitely on track to be theater royalty.Emma Watson -4

Especially now that she appears to be even closer to sealing the deal to star as Cinderella. A few weeks ago I reported on Cinderella’s director being chosen (Thor’s Kenneth Branagh) and speculated who should star as the leading lady. With Cate Blanchett already cast as the wicked stepmother, I was anxious to see whom they might choose. Emma Watson is currently in talks to play the part and seems to be a shoe-in (pun intended) to be the slipper-losing princess.

Previously, she was attached to play Belle in a Beauty and the Beast live-action film helmed by Guillermo del Toro. Currently, that project looks to be on the backburner if not worse so Cinderella looks to be a pretty solid project and Watson is a fantastic choice. (Read more about her possible casting HERE) I’d say it’s perfect casting. It fits her. And you know what they say about “if the shoe fits”!

Thoughts on CinderEMMA?

#3- “The HORROR of sequels. When horror movie titles say something like “The LAST Exorcism,” it makes you stop and wonder what happened when they release “The Last Exorcism…Part II.” Ah, the money-making grab of horror movies and their insistent unnecessary sequels. Paranormal Activity, Saw, Friday the 13th and more. Well, here’s some news about some other upcoming horror flick sequels:

  1. Sinister 2 -Sequel to be written by Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill from the 2012 film that starred Ethan Hawke.
  2. Insidious Chapter 2 -has been pushed back from August 30, 2013 to September 20, 2013. The sequel to the 2011 thriller will star Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne once again.
  3. Evil Dead 4 -Sam Raimi announced that he will be working on the script this summer. Odd to make a 4th installment right after preparing to release an entire reboot.

Well, the horror genre continues to slash and gash the pocketbooks of movie lovers. With rumors of other series being continued or even rebooted entirely (i.e. SAW), anything is up for grabs. Pretty soon someone will try to remake The Birds. Mark my words.

Are you interested in any of today’s horror film news?

#4- “Proud Zombies with Prejudice Rise Again.” About a year and a half ago I reported that the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was experiencing quite a bit of difficulty coming to life. From searching for a leading lady to trying to secure and keep a director, no one seem proud to be a part of the project.ppz

The original screenplay (written by director David O. Russell of Silver Linings Playbook) looks to be back in pre-production mode soon as films such as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters have blazed a little more of the trail for acceptance of such a mash-up. Based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, this story centers around Jane Austen’s heroine Ms. Elizabeth Bennett who is humanity’s only hope against the threat of invasion from the walking undead. ppz

Yep, sounds like something that the world is now ready to see. 🙂

Any thoughts on who should play the lead? Jennifer Lawrence? Time-period actress Keira Knightley? Jessica Biel?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Wreck-It Ralph– In my opinion, the best video game movie ever made to date, finally hits blu-ray this week. Follow video game bad guy, Ralph, as he seeks to find meaning and purpose in the world of games that he has known all his life. With a message for kids to strive to be what you want and find success, along with tons of cameos for “older” kids to watch and look for, Wreck-It Ralph is a fantastic delight for all. Loaded with tons of easter eggs, get ready to hit the pause button plenty of times. You can check out my full review of Wreck-It Ralph HERE.wreckit

Several other films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: Schindler’s List (20th anniversary blu-ray), Red Dawn, Playing for Keeps, The Intouchables, Lay the Favorite and more.

***Don’t forget to check out the recent RUMOR news on The Justice League movie and Christopher Nolan/Christopher Bale HERE.

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!

I think the funniest thing about Obama’s slip is that he is known to be a bit of a geek; this is a guy who collected Spider-Man and Conan comics for a long time. So it’s not a politician pretending to be “one of us” and goofing up, it’s a guy who is “one of us” goofing up… which is even funnier. 😀
