This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  Last weekend, 2 wide new releases entered the box office arena to compete for the #1 spot. And Oz proved to be VERY powerful indeed with the largest weekend winnings of 2013 so far! Dead Man Down (Review to come) wasn’t too dead in the water at #4, but it was definitely clear that Oz was a wiz of a wiz and proved wonderful as legend would have it for many.  for the most part, it was a colossal calamity. And, once again, it was fun to see films Silver Linings Playbook still beating newer releases while in its 17th week in theaters.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Mar. 8 -Sun, Mar. 10:

  1. Oz the Great and Powerful ~$80.3M ($150.2M WORLDWIDE)
  2. Jack the Giant Slayer ~$10M
  3. Identity Thief ~$6.3M
  4. Dead Man Down ~$5.4M
  5. Snitch ~$5.1M
  6. 21 and Over ~$5M
  7. Safe Haven ~$3.8M
  8. Silver Linings Playbook ~3.7M
  9. Escape from Planet Earth ~$3.2M
  10. The Last Exorcism Part II ~$3.1M

*Actuals may vary as earnings are updated much later on Monday afternoons. For updates, visit boxofficemojo.com.

Congratulations to Oz the Great and Powerful (read my review).oz

What did YOU watch this weekend?

#2- “Enterprising into New Worlds” The upcoming anticipated sequel to 2009’s Star Trek has released a new poster that takes the Enterprise crew into a different world to be sure. Check out the newest poster for Star Trek Into Darkness along with the most recent teaser trailer.

startrek

Here is the synopsis:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

New teaser trailer:

Star Trek Into Darkness is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Bruce Greenwood and more and is scheduled for release in theaters on May 17, 2013.

Thoughts on the new poster/trailer? Who’s ready to trek into Darkness?

#3- “Hired by Horrible Bosses again! A sequel to the hilarious comedy Horrible Bosses is in the works. The 2011 comedy that told the tale of 3 employees disenchanted with their employers that enact on plans to rid each other of their disparaging bosses was a major hit with audiences. Starring Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudekis, Jennifer Aniston, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and more, plans for a part 2 were laid, but nothing seemed to be happening.horrible bosses

But, just this past week, Bateman, Day and Sudekis all have signed on for a chance at another successful sequel. (Horrible Bosses made over $200 million with a budget of only $35 million!) While Jamie Foxx is still apparently in negotiations and no news has surfaced about Aniston, Spacey and Farrell, the reprisal of the first trio lends itself to promise of comedic fun at employers’ expense.horrible

Comedy sequels tend to be more of a bust than a blockbuster (Hangover II, Dumb and Dumberer, Goldmember, etc), but perhaps they can turn it around. Other comedy sequels coming soon: Hangover Part III, Grown Ups 2 and Anchorman: The Legend Continues.

Are you ready to see the trio work again for Horrible Bosses?

#4- “Play it again, Sam…please!” Sam Mendes, director of Skyfall (one of the BEST 007 movies to date), announced last week that he would not be directing the next Bond film (and the crowd yells “BOOOO!!!”). Check out ClevverMovies report in the video below and see why Mendes will not be returning.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? over Bond?!! Well, either way, thank you Sam Mendes for working with Daniel Craig, Judi Dench and everyone else to create a great comeback for the franchise! We hope to see you “bond”ed once again soon.bond

Well, what are your thoughts? Do you want Mendes to return? Do you want Nolan to direct? Are you ready for more Bond?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Life of Pi– Winner of 4 Oscars, including Best Director, Life of Pi comes to stores this week and is a beautiful visual telling of a tale of survival, discovery, emotion, humanity philosophy and more. One of the BEST films of 2012 and definitely deserves a watch…or two…or more! (I saw it twice in theaters and look forward to adding it to my collection.) Taken from the pages of the famous book, Life of Pi is directed by Ang Lee and is quite the moving delight. You can check out my full review of Life of Pi HERE.life of pi bd

Several other films also release this week. Check it out!

Also releasing: Rise of the Guardians (read my REVIEW), Willow, Hitchcock (read my REVIEW), Mulan/MulanII, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D (read my REVIEW), This Must be the Place, Christine and more.

It’s sad that Mendes won’t come back who better to takeover than the great Christopher Nolan even though I don’t he will at this point with other commitments with the DC movies.

I really liked what Mendes did with Skyfall. it’ll be interesting to say the least. I feel like I’m the only one who DOESNT want Nolan to be a part of DC anymore. (I really want him to continue his trend of awesome original stuff and not be “stuck” in superheroes.) Thanks for commenting today!
