This Just In!!…
#1- “The Weekend Winner.” Last weekend, 2 wide new releases entered the Top Ten of the box office arena. Monsters and Zombies battled against Superman…and won! What an amazing debut for Monsters University and World War Z. Man of Steel may have dropped ~65% from the previous weekend, but it still managed to (1) make $41M and (2) pass $400M worldwide! Iron Man 3 hung on to its #10 spot from last weekend for what will probably be its last weekend in the Top Ten.
Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, June 21-Sun, June 23:
- Monsters University ~$82M
- World War Z ~$66M
- Man of Steel ~$41M
- This is the End ~$13M
- Now You See Me ~$7.9M
- Fast & Furious 6 ~$4.7M
- The Internship ~$3.42M
- The Purge ~$3.41M
- Star Trek Into Darkness ~$3M
- Iron Man 3 ~$2.2M

Congratulations to Monsters University (read my review).
What did YOU watch this weekend?
#2- “Where there’s a Will, there’s a way, except on Independence Day.” The much discussed probable sequel for 1996’s epic blockbuster Independence Day is, debatedly, an unnecessary one…but, it is coming! Director Ronald Emmerich has confirmed that ID4.2 is coming. Initial plans were for two sequels (a part 1 cliffhanger and part 2 continuation) that were to take place 20 years after the initial invasion.
In a recent interview, Emmerich confirmed that ID4.2 would be the next project he works on as Fox announed the new release date of July 3, 2015, however, that Fox seems to currently be focusing on just ONE of the sequels and gauging its reception prior to committing to making Independence Day a trilogy with a proposed ID4.3.
The big question…will Will Smith be cast in the blockbuster’s sequel? Emmerich’s answer:
“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film [in the script] and the other half people who are new.”
And…there you have it. No Will for ID4.2. However, you can expect to see other returning castmembers such as Bill Pulham as former President Thomas Whitmore! I just hope they don’t bring in Jaden Smith. Look for ID4.2 in theaters on July 3, 2015. You can see Ronald Emmerich’s next film White House Down in theaters this weekend (June 28).
Are you even interested in a sequel without Will Smith? Does and ID4 sequel even appeal to you at all?
I came up with ID4.2 and ID4.3. You know you like it! 😀
#3- “Web of details for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.“ Tons of rumors, news and speculation has littered the interwebs about the upcoming sequel to the greatest superhero of all time! (okay, perhaps I’m a bit biased). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is webslinging its way to post-production on track for a May 2, 2014 release date, but some recent details have caused for a bit of criticism and speculation.
Here is the latest roundup of news for the webhead’s next film:
- Felicity Jones joins cast in a role speculated to be Felicia Hardy/Black Cat. [My opinion: I think she may be someone else not as important.]
“It’s TOP secret. I can tell you that she’s sort of on the baddie’s side, but I can’t explain much more than that,”…“Just the scale was incredible. It’s a different challenge to be on an enormous set, surrounded by hundreds of extras, as opposed to just being 20 people in the room.” –Felicity Jones
- Character Mary Jane Watson will NOT appear in The Amazing Spider-man 2, but will appear finally in part 3. Shailene Woodley may be replaced as MJ Watson due to her future roles in other films which may prevent her schedule from being available. [My opinion: 2 reasons for this -(1) give Gwen Stacy more spotlight prior to her exit, and (2) Filmmakers listened to fans saying S.W. really isn’t “MJ” material.]
“Of course I’m bummed,”…“But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film.” –Shailene Woodley
—Who do you think should play the role of Mary Jane Watson?
- Sarah Gadon joins cast in an announced role. Speculated as Mary Jane but confirmed to not be the “replacement.” [My opinion: She will be Felicia Hardy/Black Cat]
Anyone else think that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 alone is getting overloaded? I like what Marc Webb did with the first one and truly hope he avoids the Raimi Spider-Man 3 debacle of too many characters. With parts 3 and 4 slated for 2016 and 2018 release dates there is plenty of time for extra characters.
Proposed/speculated future characters range from The Vulture and The Green Goblin to J.J. Jameson and more. Director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan and more, is currently filming, and is scheduled for May 2, 2014.
Any thoughts on the recent Amazing Spider-Man news?
#4- “Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother will need a hairdresser” Remember the live-action Cinderella project on the way directed by Kenneth Branagh (Thor)? The next fairytale to come to the big screen will star Lily James (Cinderella), Cate Blanchett (Lady Tremaine/Evil Stepmother), Richard Madden (Prince Charming), Sophie McShera (Drizella) and more.
The casting is still underway for numerous parts, but the latest announced castmember to join the project as the Fairy Godmother is none other than: Helena Bonham Carter.
Helena Bonham Carter joins the rest of the cast in presenting this story, written by screenplay writers Aline Brosh McKenna (27 Dresses, Morning Glory, We Bought a Zoo, The Devil Wears Prada) and Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass, About a Boy). Production is scheduled to begin this fall in London and the release date is yet to be announced.
Do you like the casting of Helena Bonham Carter?
#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:
Upside Down– This one is one that flew under the radar but is a definite MUST WATCH. Starring Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess, Upside Down is a gorgeous love story of Romeo and Juliet proportions. A great tale that impressed me. I am excited that it comes out finally. Watch this featurette:
Check out my full thoughts in my review for this film HERE and decide if it’s a movie you wish to watch.
