This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.”  Last weekend, 2 wide new releases entered the Top Ten of the box office arena. Monsters and Zombies battled against Superman…and won! What an amazing debut for Monsters University and World War Z. Man of Steel may have dropped ~65% from the previous weekend, but it still managed to (1) make $41M and (2) pass $400M worldwide! Iron Man 3 hung on to its #10 spot from last weekend for what will probably be its last weekend in the Top Ten.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, June 21-Sun, June 23:

  1. Monsters University ~$82M
  2. World War Z ~$66M
  3. Man of Steel ~$41M
  4. This is the End ~$13M
  5. Now You See Me ~$7.9M
  6. Fast & Furious 6 ~$4.7M
  7. The Internship ~$3.42M
  8. The Purge ~$3.41M

What did YOU watch this weekend?

#2- “Where there’s a Will, there’s a way, except on Independence Day.” The much discussed probable sequel for 1996’s epic blockbuster Independence Day is, debatedly, an unnecessary one…but, it is coming! Director Ronald Emmerich has confirmed that ID4.2 is coming. Initial plans were for two sequels (a part 1 cliffhanger and part 2 continuation) that were to take place 20 years after the initial invasion.independenceday2726212

In a recent interview, Emmerich confirmed that ID4.2 would be the next project he works on as Fox announed the new release date of July 3, 2015, however, that Fox seems to currently be focusing on just ONE of the sequels and gauging its reception prior to committing to making Independence Day a trilogy with a proposed ID4.3.

The big question…will Will Smith be cast in the blockbuster’s sequel? Emmerich’s answer:

“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film [in the script] and the other half people who are new.”

And…there you have it. No Will for ID4.2. However, you can expect to see other returning castmembers such as Bill Pulham as former President Thomas Whitmore! I just hope they don’t bring in Jaden Smith. Look for ID4.2 in theaters on July 3, 2015. You can see Ronald Emmerich’s next film White House Down in theaters this weekend (June 28).

Are you even interested in a sequel without Will Smith? Does and ID4 sequel even appeal to you at all?

I came up with ID4.2 and ID4.3. You know you like it! 😀

#3- “Web of details for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Tons of rumors, news and speculation has littered the interwebs about the upcoming sequel to the greatest superhero of all time! (okay, perhaps I’m a bit biased). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is webslinging its way to post-production on track for a May 2, 2014 release date, but some recent details have caused for a bit of criticism and speculation.so many plans

Here is the latest roundup of news for the webhead’s next film:

  • Felicity Jones joins cast in a role speculated to be Felicia Hardy/Black Cat. [My opinion: I think she may be someone else not as important.]

“It’s TOP secret. I can tell you that she’s sort of on the baddie’s side, but I can’t explain much more than that,”“Just the scale was incredible. It’s a different challenge to be on an enormous set, surrounded by hundreds of extras, as opposed to just being 20 people in the room.” –Felicity Jonesfelicity

  • Character Mary Jane Watson will NOT appear in The Amazing Spider-man 2, but will appear finally in part 3. Shailene Woodley may be replaced as MJ Watson due to her future roles in other films which may prevent her schedule from being available. [My opinion: 2 reasons for this -(1) give Gwen Stacy more spotlight prior to her exit, and (2) Filmmakers listened to fans saying S.W. really isn’t “MJ” material.]

“Of course I’m bummed,”…“But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film.” –Shailene Woodleyshailene

—Who do you think should play the role of Mary Jane Watson?

Emma Stone really would've been the perfect Mary Jane Watson.

Emma Stone really would’ve been the perfect Mary Jane Watson.

  • Sarah Gadon joins cast in an announced role. Speculated as Mary Jane but confirmed to not be the “replacement.” [My opinion: She will be Felicia Hardy/Black Cat]Sarah_Gadon_38186

Anyone else think that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 alone is getting overloaded? I like what Marc Webb did with the first one and truly hope he avoids the Raimi Spider-Man 3 debacle of too many characters. With parts 3 and 4 slated for 2016 and 2018 release dates there is plenty of time for extra characters.amazing-spider-man-2-kid-photo-hd

Proposed/speculated future characters range from The Vulture and The Green Goblin to J.J. Jameson and more. Director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan and more, is currently filming, and is scheduled for May 2, 2014.

Any thoughts on the recent Amazing Spider-Man news?

#4- “Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother will need a hairdresser” Remember the live-action Cinderella project on the way directed by Kenneth Branagh (Thor)? The next fairytale to come to the big screen will star Lily James (Cinderella), Cate Blanchett (Lady Tremaine/Evil Stepmother), Richard Madden (Prince Charming), Sophie McShera (Drizella) and more.

The casting is still underway for numerous parts, but the latest announced castmember to join the project as the Fairy Godmother is none other than: Helena Bonham Carter.

Helena Bonham Carter joins the rest of the cast in presenting this story, written by screenplay writers Aline Brosh McKenna (27 Dresses, Morning Glory, We Bought a Zoo, The Devil Wears Prada) and Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass, About a Boy). Production is scheduled to begin this fall in London and the release date is yet to be announced.

Do you like the casting of Helena Bonham Carter?

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

Upside Down– This one is one that flew under the radar but is a definite MUST WATCH. Starring Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess, Upside Down is a gorgeous love story of Romeo and Juliet proportions. A great tale that impressed me. I am excited that it comes out finally. Watch this featurette:

ID4.2 should be good and quite frankly I’ve had enough of the Smiths so am fine with that 😀

Spider-man should be an interesting one to watch out for, gonna be brutally focused on the trailer 😀

I feel kind of bad for Woodley. I think the backlash she got was really undeserved, I mean, Watson is a fictional character drawn in a way to appeal to male audiences. Expecting a real life women to match that exact specification…seems ridiculous to me.

And i generally could not be any less excited for Amazing Spiderman 2. First one didn’t really impress me,ad with the rate they are cramming in villains for the sequel i have no hope it will get better.

I don’t feel bad for Woodley. I don’t think she’s been ragged on too much but the truth is she isn’t really an MJ. Mary Jane was a model and more and there are some real life examples. There are even other actresses that just fit the role better. Not saying Woodley is a bad actress…although she can be better…but she just isn’t a right fit for the role. I liked her in The Descendants, but I have a few other actresses in mind that might fit the role better.

Hope that Amazing Spiderman 2 gives you more to enjoy than your expectations! Thanks for the comment my friend

I’m not looking forward to an ID4 sequel. Mostly on the idea of the aliens came here and were practically indestructible by all of our conventional methods of warfare. 20 years later we don’t have anything that is really too much more powerful than the nukes we used on them in 94.

Also, we took down a complete interstellar fleet of alien invaders with a computer virus. If they have mastered shield generation, body armor suits and interstellar flight, I want to assume they have now figured out how to install an anti-virus software and a firewall to their ship mainframes. Thus, their only weakness to us is now closed.

ha. a good point. 20 yrs later we don’t have too much more! The success of ID4.2 is really going to depend on the story. we’ll see. As long as they don’t go the route that Skyline did, then it should be at least halfway decent

I don’t mind Will Smith being gone from Independence Day 2, but I think I do mind the reasons given. This is a sequel to a big-budget blockbuster… and the director is saying they can’t afford somebody? And that he’s now “too big”? Beg pardon? Is the sequel going to take place in a shoebox or something?

On Amazing Spider-Man 2, the rumors have been swirling pretty fast, all right. Gadon as Black Cat sounds plausible, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that if she is Felicia Hardy, she won’t get into costume until the third film. Jones might be a sidekick/friend to Hardy, who knows. But yes, it does seem like Am-Spim 2 is getting mighty crowded.

I do feel bad for Woodley, to a small degree. Not because she might (might) be getting replaced, but because of the way the fanboys have handled everything about her. Don’t any of these guys remember saying that Dunst wasn’t MJ material? She worked out all right. The fact is, “MJ material” doesn’t exist in real life, and the picture of Woodley that spurred all the fanboy outrage wasn’t a filming shot, just a candid of her walking around, dressed casually, without full makeup. Yeah, of course she doesn’t look unnaturally beautiful there… she looks like MJ would look like if you saw her walking around casually. That said, I don’t believe for a moment that Sony listened to the fanboys on this — if they were in the habit of doing that, Andrew Garfield wouldn’t have been cast. I think this is exactly what they say it is — they bumped the role because of time constraints (in the film which we’re all saying is looking crowded as-is). Woodley getting replaced hasn’t even been mentioned by the director or producer yet to the best of my knowledge, it’s just been news site speculation. But even if so, it’s because juggling two franchises is difficult. She’ll do all right in the long run, I think, whether she’s MJ or not.

Thanks for the input. I’m not familiar with whatever image sparked outrage over Woodley. I expect Woodley to find great success in other roles. I truly do. While “MJ material” may not truly exist in real life (I might argue for the opposite), neither does Spider-Man. There are some actresses that I see as a much better fit to attempt to fill the shoes of the role.

Interestingly enough, AS2 wrapped filming today. Interesting to see what will all be a part.
