Trailers of the Week: (all synopses are directly from IMDB.com)

1. The Riot Club.the-riot-club-poster-405x600

  • Starring: Sam Claflin, Natalie Dormer, Jessica Brown Findlay, Max Irons and more.
  • Releasing: September 2014.
  • Director: Lone Scherfig
  • Synopsis: “Two first-year students at Oxford University join the infamous Riot Club, where reputations can be made or destroyed over the course of a single evening.”
  • Thoughts: Originally entitled “Posh,” this reminds me of The Skulls. That’s all I kept thinking about watching the trailer and wondering where Joshua Jackson was. Sam Claflin isn’t the strongest lead actor but he did do well as Finnick in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. (Same goes for Max Irons, but he was decent in The White Queen mini-series). Funny that Claflin’s in this with Natalie Dormer and they BOTH star in the next Hunger Games film. -T

2. And So It Goes.and-so-it-goes-poster-407x600

  • Starring: Diane Keaton, Michael Douglas, Frankie Valli and more.
  • Releasing: July 11, 2014
  • Director: Rob Reiner
  • Synopsis: “A self-centered realtor enlists the help of his neighbor when he’s suddenly left in charge of the granddaughter he never knew existed until his estranged son drops her off at his home.”

  • Thoughts: I like Michael Douglas and this one seems to just suit him so well. He’s truly believable as that character. With Diane Keaton along for the ride this is a comedy that will find its audience, no matter how small, during this summer season. -T

3. Lucy. (new int’l trailer)kinopoisk.ru

  • Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Analeigh Tipton and more.
  • Releasing: August 8, 2014
  • Director: Luc Besson
  • Synopsis: “A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.”
  • Thoughts: Luc Besson, Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman…just a mix of some favorites all rolled into one! Yes it seems to be a lot like Limitless, but that’s not a bad thing. I enjoyed that one too. It’s got my attention. I’ll be seeing it. But who are we kidding? It’s got Scarlett so I’d be seeing it regardless of anyone else. And so would most of you! 🙂 -T

4. Edge of Tomorrow. (extended IMAX trailer)

  • Starring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Jeremy Piven and more.
  • Releasing: June 6, 2014
  • Director: Doug Liman
  • Synopsis: “A soldier fighting in a war with aliens finds himself caught in a time loop of his last day in the battle, though he becomes better skilled along the way.”

  • Thoughts: Even Tom Cruise “haters” might like this one as Tom gets beat up and shot probably more times than he’d like to count. ha. This trailer surprised me with more footage than I was expecting. I hope we haven’t seen the whole movie now. -T

5. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Dayalexander-and-the-terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad-day-poster1-405x600

  • Starring: Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner, Bella Thorne, Burn Gorman, Megan Mullally, Dick Van Dyke and more.
  • Releasing: October 10, 2014
  • Director: Miguel Arteta
  • Synopsis: “Alexander wakes up with gum in his hair, and things just get worse as his day progresses.”
  • Thoughts: I remember the HBO storybook musical animated short film from my childhood (and the book) and look forward to this, but it honestly has some big shoes to fill. Unfortunately, most books like this don’t do so well when made into movies. Mr. Popper’s Penguins anyone? -T

6. The Hundred-Foot Journey.hundredfoot

  • Starring: Helen Mirren, Charlotte Le Bon, Rohan Chand and more.
  • Releasing: August 8, 2014
  • Director: Lasse Hallström
  • Synopsis: “A story centered on an Indian family who moves to France and opens a restaurant across the street from a Michelin-starred French restaurant.”
  • Thoughts: This looks cute. But I think that it is only getting a boost in publicity because of Dame Helen Mirren and the film’s producer, Oprah Winfrey. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but good-looking films like this should get more exposure anyways regardless of the names involved. Films in the same vein from best-selling novels like Philomena and Eat Pray Love (which I didn’t like, btw) should receive more attention.  -T

7. Good People.goodpeople

  • Starring: James Franco, Tom Wilkinson, Kate Hudson, Omar Sy and more.
  • Releasing: September 26, 2014
  • Director: Henrik Ruben Genz
  • Synopsis: “Discovering a cache of cash in their dead tenant’s apt, a couple in debt take the money and find themselves the target of a deadly adversary-the thief who stole it.”

  • Thoughts: I didn’t know about this movie until I clicked “play” on the trailer and I really like the looks of it. James Franco is just one of the actors that people like him or they don’t but I think he shines in just about everything he is in. I’m not thrown off by rom-com actress Kate Hudson in this one and think the rest of the cast is spot on. The challenge this film faces is not going down the same predictable path that so many of these films traverse. We’ll see in a few months. -T

8. Transformers: Age of Extinction.transformersIV.jpg-large

  • Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, voice acting of Peter Cullen, Ken Watanabe, John Goodman and more.
  • Releasing: June 27, 2014.
  • Director: Michael Bay
  • Synopsis: “An automobile mechanic and his daughter make a discovery that brings down the Autobots and Decepticons – and a paranoid government official – on them.”

  • Thoughts: With more action and more to look forward to, this sequel may be “more than meets the eye” and this trailer brings that explosive action. Looking very Optimus Prime centric, Transformers: Age of Extinction is an important movie for the franchise at it is sort of a “restart” button that continues where #3 left off. Can’t wait! -T

I’m there for Transformers and I’m just skipping all the trailers now. I’m just so happy that there’s nothing much I want to see when I’m off for vacation…haha! Lucy looks pretty awesome. I actually just saw Limitless and the review is going up very soon.

What you said about Edge of Tomorrow sounds exactly like something I read. BTW, did you watch Emily Blunt’s interview on Ellen about how the gear was so heavy she literally cried when she first put it on? If you haven’t, you should check it out 😉

I haven’t yet. It’s playing in the next city over but I have hesitated spending the extra in gas and tickets. Maybe rent.
